Good thing about the film is its honesty in sticking to the genre of crime thriller. No unnecessary romantic songs or mindless comedy to hinder the narration. Varma’s rationalism comes handy in the film. Film opens with a verse told in Mahabharatha that bad people need to be punished. In fact, a song debating between what’s good and what’s bad going by characters of Ramayana and Mahabharatha. Manoj is left helpless as one after other family members are killed. Second half shows how he takes revenge.
Manoj’s rugged look with beard was apt for his role. He gave stylish and intense performance. It can be claimed, one of his best performances. There is a mass angle to his role, especially in the climax scene where Kumkum(Saffron) is spilled all over his face and he bangs on villains with a bell.
Surabhi looked cute but has nothing much to do except nagging her beau to give up revenge. Prakash Raj’s get up is good. He has done such a role in several films. Naveen Vadde is okay. Abhimanyu Singh is good as villain. Poonam Kaur is a surprise package. She plays a vamp and sidekick of Abhimanyu. Varma uses his camera angles well in capturing her thighs.
It is well known that Ram Gopal Varma is a biggest fan of The God Father. He is stuck with the idea of mafia and dons. Most of his movies are products of the same idea. He has made umpteen movies on the same line. Gayam being the first one, Sathya, Sarkar, Rakta Charitra and Rowdy more or less fall in the same category. RGV is also fond of biopics of criminals.
