The instinct is deep inside!

INTRODUCTION

As the mosquitos won’t let me sleep today, I come up with this review, jumping from the bed with the words ’’eureka’’. A long time had passed since I watched a Hollywood movie and I almost went for ’’Constantine’’ when I got the DVD of Basic Instinct from my friend.

My friend seemed very much attracted to this movie to keep a DVD copy for himself. So I decided to find out what was so special about this movie. I had heard the name of this movie many times, but this time, I decided to have a look into it.

After watching the movie, I found it somewhat similiar to ’’Wild Things’’, another steamy twisted thriller, but this one seemed to offer far more than Wild Things, not only as a suspense thriller, but in many different ways. But after I completed watching this one, I just got a feeling that the other one was better.

THE TWIST

A famous retired rock-and-roll star called Johnny Boz is murdered. He was found tied to the bed, with wounds all over the body made with an ice pick. He was one of the prominent figures and the detective investigating this case is Nick Curren (Michael Douglas) and his assistant as well as his best friend Gus (George Dzundza).

The principal suspect is his girlfriend, Catherine Tramell (Sharon Stone) because she had some relationships with the dead man and being a writer, she had written in her book about a much similiar situation where a rock-and-roll star was killed.

There are not many suspects.....

1) The writer herself is the killer and she had been planing this murder for a very long time, right from the moment when she got the idea of writing the book. It will be one of the most difficult things to make her accept the fact that she is the killer because the only things she will say will be ’’Am I that much dumb to kill someone just as depicted in my book so that I will be the prime accused?’’

2) Some one who wants the downfall of the writer. Then the most probable person would be Dr.Elizabeth Garner (Jeane Tripplehorn), a former colleague of Catherine who did have problems with her in the early college days. She is now a psychatrist and loves Nick.

3) Another small amount of suspicion need to go to the lesbian lover of Catherine, Roxy (Leilani Sarelle) who doesn’t like her ’’girlfriend’’ to interact much with men. But this case of suspicion is not be lasting much longer.

Our hero is now attracted to the writer and lets see what effect is that going to have on the investigation.....well, the movie is going to be a bit longer than you will expect. If you get a DVD of the movie you will be able to see the making of the movie as well as the cast and crew details with lots more. The difference between the dialogues in the rated and unrated versions as well as the story board can be seen in the menu.....

PERFORMANCE

For Sharon Stone, this movie may be ’’the twist of fate’’. She has given some good performance in the movie and this one may be the movie that got her into the top list of Hollywood. Her dialogues have been superb, apart from those steamy scenes.

Her police interrogation may be one of the most talked about scenes. It starts off with the cops saying ’’No smoking permitted in the building’’ and she answers - ’’What are you going to do? Charge me with smoking?’’ The rest are to be seen.

Michael Douglas has done a good job, but the movie was more concentrated on ’’lady killer’’ and it was obvious that he is no the centre of attraction, but Sharon Stone is. Jeane Tripplehorn is good, but I don’t remember seeing him in much movies other than ’’Water World’’. She looked extremely good throughout the movie.

CONCLUSION

The suspense factor drives the movie. But the first scene did give a somewhat clear vision about the killer to me and from each dialogue that comes out, it will not be hard way to detect th murderer, even if there are lots of scenes and dialogues in the movie to distract the viewers from knowing the truth. Just look at the way our killer uses the ice pick for murder as well as in life. This may be what I call ’’a predictable suspense thriller’’.

Well, the movie isn’t for kids, as our so called ’’lady killers’’ doesn’t need an appropriate reason to throw away their cloths. After watching the movie, the conclusion that I reached was that the director may not have been looking for a real thriller.

The end of the movie didn’t impress me - even worse movies had better endings than this. Still, a good time-pass movie, especially as not many wants to avoid controversial movies.....I did hear about Basic Instinct II - wonder when it comes down.....
