Not A Bad Debut

When Britney Spears  first came out in 1999, music and radio were changing forever!  Britney started out with the hit single  ( Hit Me ) Baby One More Time!  Alot of people assumed that Britney was the new Debbie Gibson!  I beg to differ on that note!  Britney and Deborah ( aka Debbie ) Gibson are not even close in comparison!  Britney was more risky in her video for the single!  The single was upbeat and dancy!  I personally like this song and consider it a classic pop hit!  The video on the other hand, I felt Britney was too young for the way she looked, sporting a catholic girl’s uniform unbuttoned at the top of her blouse!  Just a little too much for a 16 year old to be doing!

Next came the hit single ( You Drive Me ) Crazy, and there were two mixes for the song!  The Lp mix was good and was good enough to throw out to radio, but do to the Melissa Joan Hart movie of the same title, it was a great marketing idea to push the single and the movie together, which means a remix was in demand!  The video also had scenes from the movie and Britney again sporting sexy outfits!  Not too big on her little sexy waitress uniform she sported, but it had great choreography in the video and radio also gave the song decent air play!

Britney’s third single did not do so well, and that was her song Sometimes, I felt the song was too much of a rip off from a Backstreet Boys song!  Britney and Backstreet are on the same lable but there should have been a slightly different feel to the song!  Sometimes was not a bad song, it just  contradicts itself in many places, which I had to agree with VH1 when they named it one of the worst love songs of all time...because how can one say they want someone, then want to run and hide?  In melody, the song was pretty, and the video was not too bad!

Frrom The Bottom Of My Broken Heart came from the cd and it was also Britney’s last single from the album!  This was a great song, but unfortunately it did not play well with radio, or Mtv!!  I thought Britney did ok on her vocal here, but I guess it shows that most people do not think she can do ballads!

Other songs on the debut were E-mail My Heart ( which I personally feel that was probably the dumbest song ever recorded by anyone ) and also the remake of The Beat Goes On, I really wasn’t crazy about Britney remaking this song!  I am sure anyone who likes Sonny and Cher, and anyone of that generation would agree!  There was also a track on the disc called Soda Pop, which was a fun and upbeat regga like track!  I liked the song a lot and too bad it was not aimed at radio, for I feel it may have done much better than the last two singles!

Over all , Britney had a great debut, but I also do not really think this was an adult cd, this was teen pop all the way!  Britney could not come close to acts such as Tiffany and Deborah Gibson, since the two of the 80’s were in a completely different category and times were MUCH different then!  Britney could not come close to what those two were!  I feel Gibson and Tiffany had much more mature songs for their young ages and Britney sort falls under simple bubble gum like pop with this debut!  A great effort, but not a pop classic by any means!
