I had the great chance to see DC?s new comic book film, Constantine. Constantine was film that utterly took you through a battle between Heaven and Hell.
While watching the film I felt like I was in one of those places, unfortunately it was not Heaven. The film lacked a good story and seemed too predictable.
The scenes in it dragged on and on. The thing that saved it from horrible failure was the special effects. The effects of how the wings are made in the film are amazing and look beautiful on the characters.
The way Hell was made too was a good choice. Hell is like an apocalyptic Earth with cars and buildings on fire.
Many critics said that Constantine is similar to The Matrix. ?Why, just because Keanu Reeves is in it?? The film has no aspects of The Matrix in it, not even the fight techniques. What it does have is some nice CGI demons flying around and running around in Hell.
Constantine is about DC?s comic character, John Constantine. Constantine, played by Keanu Reeves, is a super-natural detective/exorcist type who sends demons back into Hell. Constantine is confused about his latest exorcism because a demon was trying to cross over into Earth.
Neither Angels nor Demons are allowed to cross over to the middle plane. There are half-breeds in the story which are half-human and half-demon or angel. These characters help put thoughts into peoples? head and can be seen by only people with great ability.
The reason they are there is because Satan and God made a wager on who could get the most souls into their domain. They play everyone as if it is a game.
Constantine is later joined by Angela Dodson, who is a police detective and played by Mummy star Rachel Weilz. Angela is trying to find out the mystery of what really happened to her twin sister, who committed suicide. Angela does not believe that her twin had it in her.
Constantine and Angela team up to figure out what is really going on with the demons crossing and the death of her twin.
Constantine is also fighting another struggle and that is the one to get himself into Heaven. He committed suicide and went to Hell for two minutes and then recovered. Since then he has been trying to redeem himself by sending the demons back to Hell. No matter what he does seems to satisfy the Lord.
The film hits religion with a headshot and may offend some hardcore Christians. The belief of the film seems to go off of more of a Catholicism belief than any other Christian belief.
Keanu Reeves puts on his same monotone performance. No matter what film he is in, he still sounds like the surfer boy. The movie kind of reminded me of the Bill and Ted?s Hell scene in Bill and Ted?s Bogus Journey.
The Matrix was his best film and he will never get out of the spotlight of that film. Reeves plays the same type of character and will not prove me wrong until he changes his voice in a film.
He should stick to making surfer films, possibly the next one could be ?Point Break: Part Dude.? I know cheesy.
Bush lead singer, Gavin Rossdale, put on a great performance as his first acting role in a feature film. Rossdale played one of the evil half-breeds and made a believable evil person.
The other surprising performance was Shia LeBeouf, the young actor from Even Stevens. LeBeouf has a very promising acting career ahead of him. His witty comedy in this film and in I Robot has made him a true player in the field of film.
This film is Rated: R for its violence and language. The film deserves only 2 ½ Rockets, so I would save your jet fuel and rent it on DVD.
I mainly saw this film because I love comic book films, and if you want to see it because of that I would still wait.
It is one of the biggest comic flops since the Catwoman film. Many comic book fans say it does not follow the story of the true Constantine anyways. You can listen to my review or not, but save the money and just rent it.
One last thing, I wanted to let people know that the character of Constantine was created in Erie, PA.
