When most people think of Croatia, all they think of is the recent civil war. Well, I have news for everyone-- the war has been over for 10 years, and Croatia is an incredible country to visit!
From mountains, to lakes, waterfalls, forest and coastline, Croatia is filled with natural beauty. Located on the Adriatic Sea, the coast looks like Norwegian fjords, but with much warmer water! The coasts are rocky, but there will be no sand stuck in your bathing suit. You may wish to bring a thin pad to lay on if you choose to get a tan. Most beaches are topless, and some are nude so check out what others are wearing and make sure you fit into the local atmosphere. If no one else is nude, you should not be either!!!
Beyond the natural beauty of Croatia, go check out the culture. The country is mainly Roman Catholic, with cathedrals and shrines throughout the country. If you are interested in the recent civil war, you can drive through the countryside and be a first-hand witness to the ravages of war. Much of the damage to individual houses has not been repaired since the owners have not returned to the country.
The cuisine in Croatia is similar to any other Mediterannean country. Olives, tomatoes, and wine grapes grow in abundance and are used in many dishes. Seafood is also plentiful. Be sure to try some excellent calamari. Also, Croatia has many different fruit-based liquors, many of which are cheap and home-made and very good.
The people in Croatia are extremely friendly, and defy most of what Americans view as rude European ways. Many people speak english, particularly in the larger cities, or are willing to try. If not, a polite smile and simple hand gestures, along with a willing attitude, will allow you to get by very well.
I would highly recommend Croatia as an undiscovered treasure of travel destinations.
