Delhi 6 is third directorial venture of Rakesh Omprakash Mehra after two highly acclaimed AKS & RANG DE BASANTI.
I wasnt expecting another RDB but of course a different story with good message. The story is engaging but the message is muddled. Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) comes from New York to deposit his grandmother (Waheeda Rehman) in old Delhi. There Roshan gets involved in hte life of his new neighbour and friends living around him.
Delhi 6 bears an uncanny resemblance with SWADES, where Shah Rukh Khan , NASA Global Precipetant Manager too gets involved in the life of Charanpur village. Difference is that Swades had a compelling plot with patriotic feeling, while in DELHI 6, it is the characters which makes the film more engaging because the plot sometimes drag in places. The cameo of Amitabh Bachchan in the climax is not so happening as well, the film at last becomes an Hindu-Muslim war which is very simplistic. Despite the flaw, Delhi 6 is a wonderful experience.
A.R.Rahmans Music is outstanding which contributes to the films finest to finest moments like spontaneous choreography of Geenda Phool & Visual Delight of Masakali. The characters are however the heart of the film, well enacted by the ensemble cast. The actors who makes a lasting Impression is **Om Puri, Pawan Malhotra, Supriya Pathak, Sheeba Chaddha, Atul Kulkarni & Vijay Raaz.
The New Discovery Aditi Rao Hydari who stars as Rama Bua has an undeniable screen presence and gives a fine performance. Divya Dutta is amazing as the low caste sweeper Jalebi. Waheeda Rahman & Rishi Kapoor, though in short role delivers convincing act. Deepak Dobriyal, the Jalebi wala (introduced in Omkara) is powerful.
Amongst the lead, Abhishek Bachchanhams first due to his fake American accent but eventually warms up. He manages with minimal dialouge and conveys through his eyes effectively. But It is Sonam Kapoor, who steals the show despite limited role. She is like breathe in fresh air and most importantly looks the character of Bittu. She is even gorgeous like ever. Delhi 6 is a good film with heart. Of course dont expect masterpiece like Rang De Basanti.
