As I have mentioned in my profile, my worst fear is spiders. I literally break out in hives from the very sight of a spider. Well, to my surprise I found myself watching this “creepy-crawlers” movie with my family. Upon the first sight of spiders in the movie, I immediately began to itch, my hands became cold and clammy, with every brush of wind or touch of my hair against my face, I’d go into a fist-swinging, screaming frenzy, yelling “Get it off me!, Get it off me!
However, I did manage to intake a big portion of the movie, once I nudged myself between everyone else on the sofa. From what I could see, the story takes place in the Arizona desert town of Prosperity, a rather dull and inactive little town.
Enters excitement when a toxic spill oozes into, what else, the spider farm! Now you have these gigantic, mutated spiders on the loose and sparing no lives as they crawl, jump, and web everything movable.
Enters David Arquette, (who is hopelessly in love with the sheriff of the town), played by Kari Wuhrer, her kids, and the annoying radio talker, played by Doug E. Doug.
This unprepared group must now save the sleepy town of Prosperity from these mutated, “eight-legged freaks.”
After a short while, the fear of spiders faded from my mind as this suddenly became a typical, popcorn movie, which is predictable every step of the way. Think about it. A chemical spill, a nearby spider farm, pet spiders-gone-bad, kills owner, a little boy who knows the truth but no one believes him, curious cave workers, no phone lines, a battery-dead cell phone, missing townspeople, an over-weight, scary cop, and the rest is…well…predictable.
After seeing this movie, it might be safe to say that, “I ‘may’ be just a bit less spider-phobic.”
