It was a miraculous scene. You wouldn?t believe it, unless you were in my place, and I nearly don?t believe it either! As I was watching this new Ram Gopal Verma flick, this strange occurrence came to be. I felt myself disappearing as well?no, don?t laugh?it was an extremely weird situation to be in. My friends went frantic, trying to locate where I?d got to and I don?t suppose I?d be lucky enough to be writing this review unless Shaba accidentally tripped on me.
To tell you the truth, I have no idea how I got into that position. I was spread-eagled on my back, lying on the floor and not in a conscious state of mind!!!!!
I know you?re shocked; anyone would be. After all, such incidences don?t take place everyday, do they? They only take place under extremely special circumstances.
Watching Gayab constitutes as just such an incident.
-The movie begins with Tusshar playing the character of a boy, who is bullied by his mother, misbehaved with the rest of society and so desperately boring and unnoticeable that the girl who he dotes on fails to notice him even though he lives right in front of her. In the beginning of the movie, you tend to hold some sympathy for the poor loner who has nothing of what he so desires; friends, the girl he loves and a personality.
-The emotion lasts for the first 20 minutes of the movie. Then somehow you begin to see for yourself why the character Tusshar plays is not worth giving two hoots about. That?s when the movie begins to get to you; slowly strangling and torturing its viewers.
-The rest of the movie was worth watching only because I paid $1.25 for renting the cassette. I began to entertain myself by thinking of movies with more futile characters, more useless plots but even I was unable to think of anything that can compare to Gayab.
-There are some parts of the movie that frustrate even the most enthusiastic of viewers. For example the only shirt that Tusshar can stay invisible in is the one that he first acquired his powers of invisibility in. The proof of an imaginative storyteller, or the signs of a writer with no other way to make his story more entertaining?
-Then again, the girl Tusshar is infatuated with is more or less based on Urmila Matondkar?s Rangeela character colourful girl and through the entire movie she comes off as a show-girl who wears little tops or transparent salwar-kameez and funny hats and whose idea of love is to sing Hinglish songs in the middle of the street with her intended.
-As you can understand, the director was trying to cast her as a mature, reasonable and model young lady. At least they got the model part of it right!
Anyway, since I had to complete an assignment and hand it in early the next morning, the least I can say about Gayab was that it helped me get off to a good nap and be ready to take on my work! Thanks Gayab!
