It grows on you

Sometimes music can be so over powering that it brings you to tears... no words... just music. When I listen to music, I look for one thing... either the music or the words must communicate with me at some level.

This album by Soul Asylum communicates with it’s words. I agree that isn’t as powerful as the effect of music alone, but trust me on this one... you can actually ’feel’ this album.

Anybody who listens to rock will know that rock music just has a way of making you live the song. You can feel the energy, the anger, the sorrow (seldom is it about joy) :)

One thing that’s true for most rock bands is that they’re honest. Honest about their emotions and reactions... though I don’t really appreciate brutal honesty like ’used to love her but had to kill her’ ;)

Anyway, coming back to this album.. it’s called the Grave Dancers Union.

The titles of the songs scream attitude like ’somebody to shove’, but if you hear the songs you’ll see what’s so special about this band. There’s a sensitive undertone to their songs.

I love the insightful https://lyrics.... wonder if insightful’s the right word. What I really mean is that this band has a way of stringing words together that make such complete sense..

so many secrets I couldn’t keep

promised myself I wouldn’t weep

one more promise I couldn’t keep

seems no one can help me now

I’m in too deep there’s no way out

One of my favs...

I wanna live with you in the fifth dimension

in a dream I never had

coz I just can’t live like this

in a world like this

I just wanna kiss good-bye

This album has given Soul Asylum it’s biggest hit in ’runaway train’. It’s truly an anthem. The words... the music... it’s pure magic.

Now the reason I would recommend this album is because it grows on you. The music isn’t real catchy and like most rock albums, you will have to listen to it a couple of times to get ’with it’. However the words are perfect. The frustration, confusion, anger, love, irritation, pain....... it’s all so real. The songs haven’t been written for an album , they’ve been written coz they’ve been felt.

Somebody to shove

A fast paced number with lots of noise :)

Black Gold

Talks of so much stuff that I don’t know what to put down here.

I don’t care about no wheelchair

I got so much left to do with my life...

Runaway Train

This is a song you must listen to. MUST. This is the song that defines Soul Asylum. The words and the music, all ’A’ class. Nice guitar licks.

Keep it up

This is one song to listen to when you need to ’keep it up’ :) A very peppy number indeed.

Homesick

I’m homesick for the home I never had ..... a soulful slow number.

Get on out

I like the guitaring here, erratic :) The song’s got a nice pace too.

New World

Hmm... I don’t particularly like this one coz here they singing sets the rhythm for the song.

April Fool

I like the weird junky singing style here.

Without a trace

This again is a rather slow number but it’s just so good. Talks of how all efforts fail forcing him to leave without a trace

Growing into you

A very ordinary number by Soul Asylum standards. The chorus sounds don’t sound that original.

99 %

Loads of noise. A very honest song (though not something any girlfriend would wanna hear).

once in a while you get on my nerves... once in a while I gotta tell you... I love you 99% of the time...

The sun maid

Now this one song... well sorry to other Soul Asylum fans... but I found this song to have an almost ’nursery rhymish’ beat to it. I don’t like it at all.

All in all, I’d suggest you go in for this album if you’re either new to rock or if you like music that means something. This album doesn’t have head banging sort of music, but it sure has the attitude.

Listen, understand, feel and enjoy :)
