To begin with ....
According to me, following are the unwanted factors which can ruin a high potential film:
1) LENGTH
2)UNWANTED HUMOUR
3)EXTRA SONGS
4)EXTRA TEARS
5)STARS WHICH SEEM T BE WASTING THEIR TIME BY ACTING IN THEIR FRIENDS FILM
STORY:
This is a story about 2 couples who by some or the other reason are not happy with each other. Dev Saran(Shahrukh Khan) is married to Riya(Preity Zinta). Rishi (Abhishek Bachchan), the only son of UNCLE SAM(Amitabh Bachchan) is married to Maya(Rani Mukherjee).Kirron Kher plays the character of Devs mother.
As the film starts, we see Dev, a successful football player, who makes the final, winning goal for his team and earns for himself a 5 million dollar contract. On the other hand Riya gives an excellant interview and gets a glamorous job for herself. On the other hand, there is the fun loving Rishi who has to be reminded about his marriage. He then goes to his Dad , jo uuska bhi baap hai (in every sense), who is sleeping with a hot chic. Then the duo go in a grant procession for his wedding. Here there is Maya, the bride, who is sitting alone, all confused whether she should marry Rishi or no. She is even confused whether she loves him or befriends him. And at this crucial point , the man who comes to her rescue is Dev. A complete stranger who understands her confusion and tries to preach some good words. and they work.... she gets married.
BUT............ just after this conversation, as Dev walks out of the bunglow, he meets with an accident and injures one foot so badly that it renders him as a loser all his life... unable to play.
......5 years later...
Now we see Dev as a loser, cynical and always angry and rude to people. Riya has now become a successful DIVA, smart , beautiful , sexy and rich. Devs male ego and riyas success is coming in the middle of their love for each other. Their marriage is going through a roller coaster ride.
Maya is unable to concieve and that is bringing in frustration in her life. Rishi is in love with her but some how the marriage is at a toss.
suddenly, one day Maya and Dev happen to meet. after some initial confusion they happen to become friends. They share their problems with each other and even try to solve them. But it all ends up to be a joke. Now in their quest to make their indivisual marriage work, they come closer...and happen to fall for each other instead. They confess it to each other. Amitabh Bachchan and Kirron Kher get to know about it. Amitabh Bachchan gets a heart attack and passes by. Dev and maya decide that their relationship should come to an end and that they should try to get back to their partners. They go home and tell it to their spouses and end up getting kicked off their houses.
But somehow they dont tell it t each other and so atay away for some 3 years and then reunite.
REVIEW:
it is no doubt a soulful film. Any couple in love would love it. Also people who have been through a tough time in any relationship will love it. It is a nice film but my only complaint is that it could have been much much better. there are moments and dialogues you love to hear.
its a very romantic and real film story but .......
PLOT: the plot was excellent but the way it was told ruined it. it was streched tooooooo long. Had those unwanted romantic songs not been there , it would have made a better film. The concept was very strong but too commercialized. I think karan should reinvent his style of film making. one thing that I really liked was that the plot gave to completely different problems to the 2 couples. Between shahrukh and Preity, the problem was ego and success clash; whereas as, between Abhishek and Rani, there was a problem on the bed. I seriously believe that the film with such a great plot would have been much better if directed by someone else.
DIRECTION: bull shit.... Just the same . Nothing new .. it seemed as if the songs were from Kal ho na ho.... Why do you need shahrukh to sing such romantic songs . As usual too flashy .. too rich ... too beautifyl to see. why a foreign location when this film could have been based in India. You see Kal ho na ho in the film all the time. Huge budget but wasted. I know he will earn money but it would have been better if a better film would have made money.
SCREENPLAY: horribly long ... as I said before unwanted HUMOUR in the starting of the film was irritating. By the end of the film it was streched too long. an entire song dedicated to tears ... it wasnt touchy also... the only thing that was going on in my mind at that point was - why the hell is this chic crying so much! Even when the romance between Rani and Shahrukh was developing ... there was so much of repetition. once when Shahrukh gives a voice over and says that the cafe owners business had increased rapidly... we understood that their was something happening.... then why did he have to show all of it again. the one thing that I really liked was the way he made Preity and Abhishek react to the situation... just perfect. No extra drama!
CHARACTERS: bravo! this is one aspect of the film which was undoubtedly good. really very well carved characters. Every character has its signature. but the best was shahrukhs. the rudeness and sarcastic behaviour and so the way people reacted to him was brilliant. Abhishek -- you will love him, , , a lovely romantic character. riya and maya were fine. Maya was somewhere too mysterious .. not well defined, you will always keep wondering why is she so weird. Whereas, Riya was too ambitious... but not unreal for there are such women, especially if they have a husband like Dev.
ACTING: needless to mention that they were good. Shahrukh at times over acted. Abhishek was too good.. especially in the scene when Maya confesses to him about her and Devs relationship. I think the outburst was superb.. the way he says " did you sleep with him..?..... ?..had fun... had a lot of fun!"for this I would even like to appreciate Karan ...it was so obvious but still making him say this was very good. this showed how his mind worked when he got to know abt. it . you see the film and you know what I mean.
MUSIC: Very soothing.... but unnecessary songs.
EDITING: Most of the ROONA DHOONA should have been edited.
CINEMATOGRAPHY: ANIL did a good job. But these days everydody does it like this only... nothing new. He had beautiful Locations to frame and beautiful faces, it had to look good.
CHOREOGRAPHY: it was ok. in the song wheres the party tonight , some steps that were give to Preity didnot suit her because she had worn a skirt. otherwise great. For the other romantic songs ..between rani and Shahrukh.. they were good... nothing new though ... were a waste of time. sorry... but the film would have been better without them.
