Unimpressive

One of the most awaited movies of 2004, Main hoon na is bound to disappoint anyone who associates a value with the time spent watching movies.

?Time Pass?, ?Okey? are the remarks you would have heard from all those who have watched this movie. I am afraid we do not associate such mediocrity with Shah Rukh Khan or Sushmitha Sen. There is no dearth of average and below average movies hitting bollywod these days. It is kind of sad that stars like SRK and Sush, who do not usually settle for ordinary efforts have done so.

Army commander Ram (SRK) comes to know in the last moments of his father (Naseer) that he was born out of an extra marital fling. Rams father entrusts him with the task of winning over his step mom (Kiran Kher) and stepbrother s (Zayed Khan) affection and convincing the ?real? child to join the final rite of mixing the ashes in river. The step mom and the stepbrother live in Darjeeling. Ram happens to get an official assignment of protecting the Army chief s daughter (Amrita Rao), who happens to study in the same institution in Darjeeling as Ram s step brother.

Ram unites the family, and also ensures that project milaap, a project extending a hand of friendship to Pakistan, succeeds despite the evil designs of Raghav (Sunil Shetty ) , an ex-commander and his gang. Did I forget Sushmitha ? oh yes, she is there too. She becomes Ram s sweetheart, by the way !! Her ?meaningful? role does have an occasional dialogue and plenty of midriff exposure.

A few minutes into the movie and we can guess what it will be all about. Shades of Masoom and Matrix are conspicuous in some scenes. Some scenes are plainly naïve. Gone are the days when the audience enjoyed watching the hero using a cycle rickshaw to chase and overpower the villains who travel in a car!! It becomes too obvious that Farah Khan s visualization of direction starts and stops with some wonderful choreography. The comedy scenes are ticklish. The screenplay is unconvincing and leaves plenty of loopholes. For God s sake, when will our directors realize that ?Indianizing? a girl is not sufficient to win the heart of a guy !!

SRK is impressive, not for the things he does , but for things he does not do in this movie. His over action and shivering dialogue delivery are missing and perhaps that makes the movie a bit watchable. Amrita Rao comes up with a lovely performance and Zayed does his job well. The rest all, including Sunil Shetty appear like square pegs trying to fit in round holes. Music and choreography save the movie from becoming a total disaster. Hats off to Vasundhara Das for the song Chale jaise hawaaien? It is a class apart and only she can sing it so perfectly !!.

An assembled story is weakened further by Farah s unimaginative direction. The screenplay and dialogues are average . The saving grace is the choreography, music and the new actors. One would not expect SRK and Sush to be a part of such pathetic effort.

A terribly hyped movie ends up as a disappointing, half hearted effort despite the presence of big stars. Better luck to Farah in her next attempt !!
