Another film from the masters of the art in Malayalam: Mohanlal as the hero, Srinivasan as his sidekick and the script-writer of the film and Sathyan Anthikad as the director. They combined to make this slapstick comedy that set off a wave of me-too films in Malayalam. Before proceeding to watch this movie, make sure that you are aware of the Statutory warning: Nothing in this film is likely to happen in real life (except maybe the misfortunes that befall the heroes in the initial frames)
Mohanlal and Sreenivasan play Dasan and Vijayan, two unemployed and bankrupt young men. Believing that all their misfortunes will be washed away once they land in the Persian Gulf and get jobs, they pay a smuggler to take them to the Gulf. The song kara kaana kadalala meethe... (Over the endless ocean, my aspirations and wishes soar like a bird) poignantly tells of their hopes and aspirations. But the scoundrel whom they put their trust in, puts them ashore in Chennai, claiming that it is Dubai! The duo then gets entangled with some drug smugglers. How fortune favours on them in their struggle to bring the culprits to book forms the rest of this film.
This is another film which has been re-made into a number of other languages, and so readers may recognise the outline of the story very easily. All that remains to be said is that the original is better than the remakes, and is definitely worth a watch even if you cant follow Malayalam well.
