A Pretty Smooth Trip

I remember when I first saw Road Trip 4 years ago. The theater was packed. Mostly teenagers and 20/25 year olds. Well me and my two buddies came a bit late, so the only two seats we could find in the theater were right in the front row. I didn?t like the view. Whatever, that?s beside the point.

Road Trip begins with Barry (Tom Green) giving a tour of the Ithaca College campus to a big group of visitors. Suddenly, his tour becomes boring and the visitors begin to complain. Then, for entertainment purposes, he sits the whole tour down and tells them the story of his good friend Josh (Breckin Meyer), and how he sent a sex tape to his girlfriend by accident.

Josh and Tiffany (Rachel Blanchard) have been best of friends since they were little kids?through pre-school, elementary school, junior high, and then high school, they always remained as close as good be. When college came around, they both went their separate ways. Tiffany to Austin, Texas, and Josh to Ithaca, New York. They promised each other that they would stay true to each other, no matter the circumstances. No sex with anyone else, yeah yeah, you know.

After a few months, Josh realizes that this can?t and won?t go on forever. So one night at a party, he gets in bed with a gorgeous blond, Beth (Amy Smart). For 26 bucks. Beth tapes them having sex, and shwoop dee doo, the tape gets sent to Tiffany at the Austin University. It wasn?t what Josh wanted, but that?s what happened.

Just watch this. It?s hysterical. Josh, Costanzo, and EL (Seann William Scott) borrow geeky nerd Kyle?s (DJ Qualls) Ford Taurus sedan and set off on their Road Trip to Austin Texas. The rest of the movie is Josh trying to get the package back in his hands before it gets to Tiffany.

Although quite short (only 90 minutes), there are many funny parts in Road Trip. For instance, on the road, the guys donate sperm, steal a bus from a blind woman, visit Barry?s grandparents, attend an all black fraternity party, and blow up their car.

Road Trip can?t really be compared to American Pie. It?s a totally different setting. This is based in college, that?s in high school. But although I was laughing constantly throughout this film, I?d have to say American Pie was much funnier. Road Trip didn?t fully live up to my expectations. Many scenes work, but more than a few misfire.

In terms of performances, Kyle (Qualls) was my favorite character. He somehow manages to carry himself with a quiet dignity, rather than just playing the stereotypical college geek. Although he’s still an exaggeration, no character is easier to relate to than Kyle, and his revolution from the beginning to the end of the film is by far the movies most interesting element. Tom Green as Barry is also a pretty funny character. The rest of the cast doesn?t do so well. Breckin Meyer as Josh is a nice guy but two-dimensional. Seann William Scott appears as if he?s still Stiffler from American Pie.

But nonetheless, Road Trip is pretty funny. I?ve seen it a few times?laughed every time. So watch it, if you have an hour and a half to blow.
