Teachers : A Very Popular Brand !

Teacher’s is reputedly the third largest selling whisky brand and is today owned by Allied Domecq plc. I wont bore you to sleep with statistics but it is clear that Teacher’s is a very popular blended whisky.

Another characteristic of this fine whisky is that it has a very high content of single malt whisky- reputedly guaranteed at 45 %. The single malts are from the Ardmore and Glendronach distilleries which are owned by the company.

This famous blended whisky also has a thoroughly fascinating history.

It all started when one William Teacher started work in a cotton mill, at the ripe old age of 7. Later he was employed by a grocer in Glasgow and clever William, he married the owner’s daughter, persuaded the firm to get a licence to sell wines and spirits and then he expanded into dram shops. These in essence were pubs selling reliable spirits and within 20 years William Teacher was the largest licence holder in all of Glasgow.

Later he was to be joined in business by his two sons , Adam and William, and they moved into wholesaling as well. They specialised in providing special brands and Teacher’s Highland Cream-first registered in 1884- became highly popular. The rest, as they say, is history.

The demand for Teacher’s grew and grew and the company built a modern blending and bottling plant in Glasgow in 1962. Fourteen years later William Teacher & Sons Ltd, joined Allied Distilleries, and today Teacher’ s is not only a big seller in the UK but around the world as well.

This fine whisky has a full flavoured character and might be said to appeal to mature whisky drinkers. I find it has a smooth, very mellow flavour, and I rate it among the best that I have tried.

Colour wise I suppose it is a light amber. In terms of alcohol by volume (ABV) it is 40 %. It is, of course, a hugely popular whisky and is easy to find. Many pubs stock it, 70 ml and one litre bottles are stocked at most off licences and nearly all the major supermarkets give shelf space to this product. You will also find, along with Red Label, Black Label Cutty Sark and J&B Rare, it is in ample supply in duty free emporiums at major international airports.

I don’t think it goes very well with food but what whisky does ?However, it is a nice pre-dinner and post dinner drink and gets very high marks from me !
