The Devil wears Prada, a film which is like a modern day Cindrella OR Snow White story.
But honestly if you recall the advice I had written on Fashion, I had no idea that a majot part of my advice would be dialogues in this film. I saw this film on Sunday and had to write about it!
The film is actually a bedtime story for the young girls of today who dream to make it big in the bIg Bad World of Fashion.
Anne (Andrea aka Andy) is a small town girl come to Manhattan to make it big in the world of Journalism. With absolutely no sense of dressing, she finds herself in the office of Miranda Priestly owner of RUNWAY magazine. Now even here in Hollywood BOLLYWOODITIS is taking place.. mother of coincidences!!
And as you would guess it.. Andy is the iconic target of the office girls who know it all in Fashion, guccis, YSLs, name them and she is the recepient of the choiciest barbs! Andy is more determined and takes over slowly but surely and overtakes Emily to be the true confidante of Miranda. The entire take in this film is on how an unfashionable girl (Stanley Tucci remarking about sizes) turns into a desirable object with choiciest of labels, falls into relationship troubles and then finds herself all over again. It just goes to prove that people get glamor struck and then get degalmorised by it when it comes to personal life! There is basically no moral to this story but what makes this movie worth watching is the vivid depiction of scenes, amazing and crisp editing, and racy very american way of dialogues!!
Meryl Streep is her restrained best. It must have taken her oodles of patience to be patiently droning out her lines but in an impeccable manner. The arrogance too was restrained but is saucy and barbaric at times delivered with great ease. She is the highlight of the film. Emily, is the next best character that happened to this film. Its this Emily which gives our Cindrella the life line to be the best. Anne Hathway is equally good but her character is more or less dependent on the Mirandas and the Emilys. Stanley Tucci as Nigel is an excellent performer (the Terminal with Tom Hanks). He is the backbone of the RUNWAY magaine. The climax where he is supposed to take off to a whirlwind career and how his hopes get dashed because Miranda wants to live, your heart goes out to him. Truly a remarkable actor. Take them away and you do not have anything here.
Devil wears Prada is a very watchable fare for those looking for killing time without giving any exercise to the grey area and then thinking of writing about it on MS!!! I genuinely liked the film as it killed my time and gave me a good reason to feel happy after seeing this feel good film. Recommended strictly for the above reason only.
p.s. For those of you who have read what I had written on Fashion Today, I did find a few things in this film that made me firmly believe in what I had written. Time for creativity, innovations, wake up dear friends we have a lot of work to do!! We cannot be called the second cousins to the USof A or PARIS, we can be INDIANS!!
