Doll's House-Confrontation Of Truth.

Henry Ibsen focuses the attention of his spectators on thecontemporary ailments of the society which cry for remedies. the word "DOLL" in the context of this play is applicable to Nora. She is dool because, during the eightyears that she has spent as Helmer’s marriage-martner, she has always beens passive and subservient kind of wife to him. It si true that on one occasion she took a bold initiative by entering into a transaction with Krogstad and obtaining the requisite amount of money in order to take her husband to Italy because he was critically ill and the doctors had told her that he could survive only if he was taken to a warm climate. The step which she took on that occasion certainly shows that she was no doll.

During the eight years following her husbands recovery she has regukarrly been playing monthly instalments to Krogstad against the principal amount and against the interest which has been accuring thereon. This too shows that she was no dool. Apart from this, she has been more or less akind of doll obeying her husbands wishes. ibsen’s play A Doll’s House draws a parallel to make belief the world in which children play at life with their dolls. A parallel is suggested by the title and by several speeches in the play between the life that is represented in the house and the false life of adoll’s house.

As her husbands doll, she has to dress and dance to his tunes. She Entertains a fond hope that her husband would perform the miracle when it is called for and her blame on him and let Krogstad publicise his letter. But all this proves to be illussions of her doll world where reality suffers a discount.. Nora will not be able to attain her self-realisation and selfhood until she leaves"home" to being a doll. Thus, we can say that Ibsen has chosen a very apt title for his play A Doll’s House. It symbolicaaly suggest that true marriage is not based on illusions. True marriage depends upon the perfect understanding between the couple by each respecting the individuality of the other.
