one of the best ongoing fantasy series

The Kate Daniels series is an ongoing urban fantasy series and it is written by a husband-wife team, Ilona and Andrew.

Their first book came out in 2007 and since then there is a book release every single year.

In this series, we follow our main character Kate Daniels, who lives in a post-apocalyptic Atlanta. And what I mean by the post-apocalyptic is that this land is almost ravaged by the magic and in this world, there was a time when the technology was very prevalent, and magic was forgotten about and was very weak within the world. But when technology went out of balance and when too far in one direction, magic came back with a vengeance. And because of such there are waves of technology and waves of magic that come forth at random.

When the magic wave is up that pretty much means that all the things that are related to magic works and anything that have to do with technology doesn’t work, for example, airplanes, computers. So whenever the magic wave goes up airplanes fall out of the sky, the buildings started to crumble, over all the world goes straight to the chaotic state.  And because of these reasons the Atlanta is always in turmoil.

The first book in the series Kate Daniels is a mercenary for hire, and she handles odd jobs which mercenary Gild gives her. When one of the closest friend of Kate gets murdered, she tries to figure out what happen to him. And the entire series work like that. In each book there is some mystery that has to be solved, there is a murder that happens, and mostly all of this is related to magic and mythologies.

This series has a bit of a different take on the old vampires, and I love the way vampires are handled in this series. In this world vampires are mindless blood thirsty creatures like beasts and there are these people who call themselves navigators who have the ability to hijack vampire’s mind and make them do whatever they want which is a really interesting take on vampires and I really enjoyed it, and I loved the basic politics that happen between the vampires and the navigators and shifters and the people who know magic. And I am forever impressed how Ilona and Andrews handles this post-apocalyptic world which is chaotic and it seems it run amuck with magic. And the magic is in a way has taken over and become a wild force and I think that part is handled and dealt in a very interesting way. Because of a lot of mythologies and magic this series could be a complete chaos, but it deals in such a fashion that it is very easy for a reader to understand without refereeing back and forth all the time.
