Mohd. Rafi and Amit Kumar.
Mohd. Rafi
Honestly, I have no reasoning to my liking. But then when for the first time I started hearing to songs like Janewalloh Zara…( OST: Dosti), Aaj Mausam Bada ( OST: Loafer), Na Ja Kahin Ab Na Ja ( OST: Mere Hamdam Mere Dost), Gulabi Ankhen ( OST: The Train), Mere Dushman tu Mere ( OST: Aye Din Bahar Ke)….and many many others, I instantly liked Rafi.
There are no favorite songs of mine, as such but then I like most of the songs he has sung. I still remember the full-fledged Rafi album that I bought as a school kid was Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon- Ek Musafir Ek Hasseena. And I had instant liking for the songs, Main Pyar Ka Rahi Hoon and Ap Yunhi Agar….and then Aanchal Mein Saja Lena Kaliya………yes the lyric writers have their skills, music directors were great but then, whenever I hear Rafi, I feel, that a sharp knife is going through a soft piece of cheese. I know funny, but that is the softness I find in his voice. The romantic songs he has sung is actually so nice, Palko ki peeche se kya tumne keh dala ( OST: Talash), Abhi Na Jao Chodd Kar ( OST: Hum Dono), Yeh Jo Chilman Hai ( OST: Mehboob ki Mehendi), Maine Poocha Chand se ( OST: Abdullah) and so many more, makes me wonder sometimes how was this person as a husband or a lover.
And then when the romantic numbers dry up, Rafi shouts, Affu Khuda….( OST: Jab Jab Phool Khile) with full gusto. Or say, he goes on singing, Mast Baharon Ka Mein Ashiq ( OST: Farz) and then, the amazing life that his voice spreads when he sings, Oh Hasseena Zulfon Wali…( OST: Teesri Manzil) or Chehra Tera Allah Allah…..( OST: Tum Hasseen Main Jawan)
Rafi was perhaps the best singer Indian music has ever seen when it came to singing sad songs. All his song from Guide specially Din Dhal Jaye is memorable. It really makes you feel for the character that sings that song. Or say, the song I mentioned called Mere Dushman tu…( OST: Aye Din Bahar Ke), believe me ladies, if your lover sings this for you, then you have really hurt her. And then there came Choo Lene Do nazuk Hoton Ko…( OST: Kajal), Kya Hua Tera Vada…and Chand Mera Dil….(OST: Ham Kissi se Kaam nahin)- all these really reflect the pain through the weird world genius’s voice.
Then the qwallies………..
And then the pure classical numbers. True he gave his touch in Baiju Bawra- but my favorite song of Rafi in classical mood is actually pictured on Mehmood, and it is Aaj Huna Aye Balma, Sawan Beeta Jay…( OST: Ziddi), just listen to this song, and imagine it is a comedy affair. Perhaps only Rafi can do this with his flair.
Rafi indeed a weird world genius. And like I said, I can’t list down my favorite songs of Rafi. I infact have all his songs. Yes I do.
I like them all. Yes, I do. That is how I like. Everything, if at all, the person is deserved to be liked.
Amit Kumar
Yes, you may say a wasted talent. But whatever he sung in those few years, that he actually sung still makes me very happy. And that is why I like Amit Kumar. I think he could have been a great singer, who knows perhaps even better than his father.
Bade Acche Lagte hai..( OST: Balika Badhu). Now when I write this song like this, I feel like listening to it. I can listen to this song perhaps the whole night and would never feel bored. And also when I think some one sung this song, in his teen-age with such a heavy voice, I feel all the more amazed. Not only the lyrics, and tune, the caliber of the singer amazes me, the most. Amit Kumar- he is the Man, who sung those amazing lines. And then he sung for all those Kumar Gaurav films- Love Story and Teri Kasam being the best.
Yes, you would all of a sudden remember the hit numbers from these films which were perhaps Yaad Aa Raha Hai ( OST: Love Story) and Yeh Zameen Ga Rahee Hai ( OST: Teri Kasam), but then, I love the two romantic numbers- Dekha Maine Ek din ek sapna…..and then…one of my type kid romantic numbers, Ham Jiss Raste Pe chale, uss raste pe thi Preet Khari….( OST: Teri Kasam)
I seriously think, if you love Indian film music, and you are kid, who laughs, cries complains, loves should buy this album of Teri Kasam, music R. D. Burman.
It is one amazing album, and Amit has given one of his complete album for this film. I would actually love to write song by song about this album.
Kya Hua Ek Baat Par….is actually a sad song. Can be called a song of complaint. It is sentimental, emotional, as if the singer says, Why was I wronged?
Then, Dil Ki baat….is a peppy song, with an inherent message. It is all success, conveyed through this song, but then there is a feeling of being Lonely at the top.
And Geet Vo hai…is perhaps the best and most lovingly penned cynical numbers. It is an amazing song, where anger is conveyed.
Ham Jiss Raste Pe, is lovely, sweet, makes you feel like a kid falling in Love.
And then Meri Geeton Mein, is perhaps, the song, of hope….that come on even I want to be in love and all…
Yeh Zameen……it is one of the very best bachelor hood song….and really nice lyrics…
I think this soundtrack is Amit Kumar’s most complete album. I remember this otherwise bad film but yes, the songs I view in my way. And Amit Kumar conveyed these feelings to me, through these songs.
Amit Kumar did sing some nice numbers. And even to-day when he lends his voice to just two lines as Bole Chudiyaaaan….( remember OST K3G, when Amitabh sings those lines)…….if you listen carefully you would understand, even in this “wasted talent” there is a difference.
That is Amit Kumar- just two words, but then amazing. And so, Dil Ka Yeh Kaam Hai….( OST: Raju Chacha) as well as songs from Jhankar Beats…for the first time I liked a remix….of Hamein Tumse Pyaar kitna….
I can write a lot more on each song that these two people have sung for me, yes perhaps for you too.
Just like listening to them. Then I like Kishore Kumar too, I like……Sonu Nigam also……and then……
Come on…….they are all good….but some identified the genius within……..and only common people do so….
These are the Fireflies, Genius….
