Superb Collection

Released by T series in mid 90s, this is one of the best albums of Jagjit-Chitra. The songs can’t be categorised strictly as ghazals, nevertheless the poetry, music, compositions, orchestration, and renderings are excellent. Jagjit and Chitra both are at their peak. Side-B is much better than Side-A, which has only one good song; ’’yeh to nahin ki gham nahin’’by Chitra. Side -B is a treasure. ’’kabhi to khulke baras’’and ankh se ankh mila’’ both by Chitra are superb. Poetry, tunes and Chitra’s voice are excellent. kabhi to khulke, has a unique, catchy rhythm. ’’tere khat’’a nazm rendered by Jagjit with passion and feeling is flawless.

It has no percussion, guitar chords are the only accompanyment. The same tune was used by Jagjit to compose ’’koi yeh kaise bataye’’for the movie Arth. The crowning glory of the album is the duet, ’’manzil na de chirag na de, housala to de’’. Everthing is great, the composition, tune, poetry, rhythm, orchestration, and the rich tonal variations used by Jagjit.

The intensity of feeling with which Jagjit appeals to God to reveal his whereabouts when he sings ’’Barson main tere naam se, khata raha fareb, lekin mere khuda, apna pata to de ’’, is so touching that , you can wipe a tear or two! An excellent album, worth the collection, and never ageing songs that you can enjoy again and again over many years.
