Well the page looks simple but the result page is heavily loaded with Web Results and Image results, this is the default behavior, I would prefer the default behavior to be just web Results, since the right column of the result page has options to enable other results like (Image, Movies, Books etc). But it is nice to see a close link to close a column which a user is not interested in.
About the results page here are few noticeable features : You can directly search for a term by adding it at the end of the URL:
Example: To search for mouth shut simple type https://a9.com/mouth shut, you would directly get the web results.
The other notable feature is the key stats about a result, if you move over Site Info button you get these stats like: Traffic Rank, Sites that link here, Speed and The site on-line since Other common features like Cache page, News result at the top of the web results are seen in other Search engines.

The Books and Movie search are good (for US users) A9 also has a Toolbar and few personalized search options for registered users.
Overall I would say a good new search engine, more updates to come :)
