Zara bachle: Madhuri rocks, but the movie sucks!

Madhuri! The very name itself causes millions of hearts to start beating a little faster. She is a modern-day Goddess worshipped by millions, a phenomenon, a class-apart in today’s era of insipid mediocre actresses, none of whom fire men’s imaginations like Madhuri did and still does. Thus it was with a twinkle in our eyes that we decided to watch the first-day-first-show of Madhuri’s long-awaited comeback movie - Aaja Nachle.

The trailers, the soundtrack and the pre-release storyline hints suggested that this movie could really go either way - towards a Chak De India, or a total snoozefest. Unfortunately, the movie is a SNOOZEFEST all the way, all caps! WHAT A MESS!

The story revolves around an NRI woman(Madhuri) who returns to her small town in India to find that the people there are giving up their cultural heritage for the sake of commercial profit. An old open-air theater is about to be torn down to be replaced with a giant shopping mall. She decides to revive the spirit of the arts in the town and fend off business interests trying to tear the theater down. The story in synopsis sounds like it could really have a lot of substance, and there could be a lot done with this storyline. The problem is that the movie turns out to be such a bore, that by the end of the movie, you are convinced the town and you would be better off with the mall instead.

One of the main letdowns in the movie is the direction; it’s just painfully amateur. The scenes, the characters, or the story just never come together. I never felt for any of the characters, nor for the story. From the first scene, right up to the last one, the awkward feeling that you are watching a badly put together primary school play just never leaves you. And you keep fighting the overwhelming urge to walk out, particularly in the interminable final-half-hour, with the incoherent and disconnected final musical performance of Laila-Majnu and the boring finish. I was very VERY antsy throughout the movie, ready to walk, but the final half-hour was just excruciating bad. I could barely look at the screen, I was that BORED out of my mind! The only thing that kept me from leaving was catching one more glance of Madhuri(los desperados, that’s me, heh).

All the decent-caliber actors like Konkona, Kunal Kapoor, Akshay Khanna, Irrfan Khan, are all wasted in forgettable parts. Even Madhuri is wasted other than the one dance called "Ishq Ishq" where she burns up the screens. Madhuri is still Numero Uno - she has the talent, beauty, grace, class and acting ability that’s unparalleled in the industry even today, and I hope she makes more movies - movies that are more entertaining with sensible stories than AN. All AN copies deserve to be destroyed, it’s that bad. The actress playing Najmabi is beautiful, and should show up in more movies. Anyone know who she is?

It’s really sad, but what could have arguably been another Chak De India and a blockbuster comeback for our Goddess falls completely flat on its face.

I do NOT recommend the movie, not even for Madhuri - her shining scenes are too few and not worth the boredom of the rest of the movie.
