Special effects can be created using the quick mask mode.
Being able to use Spot colours option is also a very good feature of PhotoShop 5.5.Spot Colours are special premixed inks used instead of or in addition to the prosess colours ie CMYK inks.
The history palette provides the ability to go beyond 1 undo & to work with previous versions of an image………There are many more features also which I guess, wont be able to write down.

Recently I downloaded PhotoShop 6.0 but found it to be little to complicated for comfort.At present I have both the versions installed in my computer & I prefer using the 5.5 version as it is user friendly & very easy to work with.
