My experience should dissuade anybody from taking Air India flight ever.  I bought Air India tickets for my Mom and Dad from Mumbai to Phoenix, My wife and kid were supposed to accompany them. I should count myself lucky that I booked tickets on travelocity.com. I got an alert from travelocity about flight change. Airindia did not bother to notify me. While flying from Phoenix to Mumbai, I did not buy ticket for my 1.5 yr. old daughter and confirmed with AirIndia about the same.
There was no problem but then my wife was told at Mumbai airport that my daughter can not fly as she does not have a ticket. Luckily my wife had a credit card so she could buy a ticket then. As soon as they reached Chicago, they were told that their tickets for Chicago to Phoenix are not vallid and they have to buy tickets. After haggling with Air India staff at OHare for 40 minutes, they were issued tickets. Luckiliy due to a gap of 3 hours, it was possible.
When I flew Mumbai to Phoenix, my ealiers ticket was Mumbai - Frankfurt - NY - Phoenix. In fact our flight went to delhi and also instead of NY we went to Chicago and had to fight with AirIndia to make arrangements to fly to our destinations in US.
After so much pain and agony, I have decided never to fly Air India. This was first and last AirIndia experience.
