I am using Airtel since last 5 years. I have used its Blackberry(EDGE) for almost 4 years and then last 1 years using 3G after returning the Blackberry and discontinuing EDGE. The main reason for returning Blackberry is Airtels network. Frequent disconnections, no range for EDGE while in Local trains, many times no range at all.
I had to face lot of scolding by my clients and supervisors due to the call disconnection, inability to reach me over the phone or email. Many a times, I had to wait till I get a good signal strength before calling the client or joining a conference call where my participation was crucial.
Since I am no longer using EDGE, this review is applicable to the 3G Service of Airtel. I have observed following while roaming around in Mumbai and suburbs. The network is not at all good while you travel in trains. I cant understand why Airtel cannot install boosters etc. to improve their connectivity for the millions of commuters travelling by Mumbai Local trains.
Central Line -
The network just vanishes between Ghatkopar and Vikhroli. Again at Kanjurmarg, it will show some weak signals then vanishes again as you come near by Thane.
From Kurla till Ray Road, the signal will keep varying and fluctuating which gives OK browsing experience. I have not checked beyond Ray Road. The signal strength is good if you are travelling on the Eastern Free way from Chembur till CST. Havent checked it on the interior roads or areas.
Harbor Line -
The network vanishes between Chembur and Govandi and then reappears as a weak signal till Mankhurd. It will again vanish once the Creek Bridge gone and directly appear only after Sanpada station is gone. The signal will be 2G and not 3G.
The signal will remain all the way till Sea Woods. Then it will disappear and appear just before entering Kharghar station. Although the signal is there, you cannot browse the Net or would be able to download anything. The signal strength is good enough to make calls.
Surprisingly, at Panvel station, the 3G signal is good and I have tried downloading or accessing some sites with no issues. Back from Kurla to Wadala, the signal is good for normal Phone call but keeps fluctuating between 2G and 3G signals.
Not tested beyond Wadala on the Harbor line.
Western.
On the Western line, I checked the signal strength till Churni Road, Girgaum area and its good if you are roaming on the streets but the moment you enter into a lane or a building, the signal would either disappear or appear very weak.
The network strength is good on the Western Highway till Kandivali. Did not get a chance yet to test the signal beyond. The experience is similar while travelling by Local train till Malad from Bandra. These observations are not made in 1 day but spread over few months. This is purely my own experience and I accept the possibility that other members have came across different experiences than mine.
Also, I have not commented on any other operator and would write a separate review if required.
Please feel free to comment on my review and rate it as per your own opinion. Appreciate feedback as always.
