AJAB PREM KI GHAZAB KAHANI. The name says it all. It’s a freaky crazy love story about a cute couple in a topsy-turvy land of strange happenings. Remember Andaz Apna Apna. The film which changed the meaning of comedy shown in Bollywood. With APKGK, the flavor is the same, just a new wine in an old bottle or so it seems.
APKGK is based on a small town talking about Prem [Ranvir Kapoor], a happy go lucky guy, who runs a Happy Club with few of his friends who are the only members of the club. Prem’s father runs a roadside eatery and his extremely skeptical about his son’s future and approach towards life.
Prem on the other hand dedicates his life fooling around with friends. He meets lady love in Jennifer [Katrina Kaif] whose foster parents and their siblings come to settle in the town. They gradually become friends after an initial misunderstanding and Prem slowly begins to fall in love with her. But he comes to know that Jenny’s foster parents have other plans for her. They plan to get her married to a rich Christian family but it is revealed that Jenny is in love with some one else, Rahul [Upen Patel].
Prem decides to help Jenny meet his love in Rahul, with Rahul’s father, a MLA Candidate [Govind Namdeo] is strongly against the relationship because of Jenny’s religion. Prem convinces Rahul and his father that if they accept Jenny, it’ll help them win the next election and they go with the plan. Meanwhile local goon Terror Teja kidnaps Jenny and asks for a huge ransom. The film ends with Jenny being saved, Terro Teja arrested and Prem getting his love in Jenny.
Confused what to expect from such a predictable script??. Well guys, clear your confusions, take your friends, hit the theatre and laugh your hearts out, coz this 150 mins of APKGK will completely freak you out. Specially the first half has some howlarious sequences, where you’ll find yourself laughing uncontrollably. The second half slows down a little and acts as a speed-breaker to the non-stop laughathon. Certain scenes could have been avoided like the one where Prem gets drunk and talks to his friends.
The penultimate chaos sequence in Terror Teja’s den brings the theatre back to life and audience come out of the theatre with a light heart. Certain sequences have been put brilliantly, which keeps the pace going for the script. Such are the frequency of the sequences that one does not feel the lack of a good script. The scene where Tony takes Jenny to the Dance Ball, the scene where Prem kidnaps his friend’s girlfriend, where Jenny slaps Prem for stammering and specially the Salman Khan special appearance are simply over the top and refreshing.
Ranvir Kapoor’s performance is top notch, just shows what he has in store for the industry in years to come. He seems to sharpen his skills with every film releasing and strikes a chord with his audience. You’ll laugh with him, cry with him, feel sorry for him and even feel sympathetic when he is upset. Katrina Kaif is good and share an excellent chemistry with Ranvir which, I’m sure will be loved by one and all. The supporting actors do justice to their part.
The music by Pritam was below average with an exception in “Tera Hone Laga Hoon”, although music had very little scope in a film like this. However a couple of good numbers would definitely have worked wonders for the film.
The script and screenplay definitely had a lot of room for cultivating something even better, maybe something close to Andaaz Apna Apna, but falls a little short of it. But that definitely does not take anything away from the film. It is anyways a must watch for every movie lover.
FINAL VERDICT: WATCH APKGK AND LAUGH OUT LOUD. CERTAIN LOOPHOLES ARE THERE, BUT THEY ARE DEFINITELY FORGIVABLE FOR THE SAKE OF ENTERTAINMENT.
