Hello My extended family -All the Ms members .it has been quite sumtime till I penned down a rev for Ms..but that will just be accounted to the hazards of a professional course .Really the Engineering sylabbus is sucha a pampered soul that it demans ur complete attention n dedication all the time.Neways getting back I am quite plaesantly suprised at the Revs abt Tamil movies .never occured to me that MS could accomadate Tamil -my Mother tongue.
With the wake of Shaad Ali’s Saathiya’ here’s a bit abt the original ’Alaipayutey’’.it literally means the jump of the tides which is I would say the most apt title a movie has had in a lot of years.The movie brillinatly made by ManiRatnam(well I am sorry but my Bias with Mani continues, I watch all his movies first day , maybe I am quite lavish in praise) is a very deep n proufound insight into the aspect or love and romance.So far the filmdom has made it a point to show us only the candy floss side of cinema which I found quite an insult to our IQ n EQ it was like we couldnt face reality so hence the Happy, unrealistic storyline .And another milestone is the attempt of showing life after’They live Happily ever after’ that is marriage , usually movies stop with a wedding but the real strife actually does begin after weddings.I am a stanuch believr in the fact that being in love and seeing each other is very easy, but the marriage and staying togther requires a lot more than just that.Which is so realistically potrayed by Mani In thsi movie.
Karthik(Madhavan) is a software guy who dreams of staring his own firm .He belonmgs to a family of a prestigious Advocate. HE is quite a happy go lucky chap till he meets Shakti(Shalini) , a doc in the making at a wedding .Their chote mote fights turn to stolen glances which finally turns to love.After days of constant pursuing Shakthi relents .But tnetnbe usual Parental opposition begings and Shakthi decided to let go but then she doscovers that she cant lve without Karthi , so they get maried secretly and stay at their respcetive holds .How thei life progresses from here.Do their parents accept them?is all HUnky Dory after that?forms the back bone of the story .
The cast includes Shalini, madhavan, swarnamalya, Arvind Swamy, Khusboo, Hari Nair etc.The music is brilliant composed by A.R Rahman and the cinamatography by P.C .Sriram has surpassed all his previous excellent efforts .The lyrics are outstanding BY Vairamuthu Sir and of course the cast is techincally n emotinally so sound n convincing.the Film in true blue Mani style has a few Train scenes(all u tamil movie buffs will vouch for the fact that Mani has a fascination for trains b it BomBay, Roja, Uyire tec), But on the whole if the loudset cheer has to go , then it has to be to the captain of the ship, Mani Ratnam sir. So IF my faith in reginal cinema is kept alive then it is bcoz of PPl like Mani.
AS Far as Saathiya goes , well we jsut have to wait and see but I have a feeling for those of us who have watched ’Alaipayuthey’ no film would be able to hold a torch to it.
