POOR GULLIVER
Albhuthadweep is close towards being a brave effort, but its just not there. As usual, this is also a different Vinayan movie for sure, but the difference is that it has got a different variety of nonsense in an entirely different manner. Vinayan has given some great movies in the past and there is no doubt about his abilities, but situation looks a bit different this time.
In a movie that is supposed to have some or lots of effect from the Gullivers travels (poor Gulliver), there is a record number of dwarves being featured in it (may be a good effort to dive into the guiness book?).
It may be a good treat for the kids to see the dwarves and the funny scenes with them, but the fact is that it does go beyond a limit. We were supposed to go to another stupid movie, Krithyam, but as it was Friday, the movie was changed and we were forced into this movie - we thought this movie would be horrible, but it didnt happen, but it was still boring!
The songs of the movie only stays at average or below average levels. The climax of the movie was almost hundred percent predictable and the plot as a whole is nothing special. Right from the beginning, we can get an idea of how the movie may progress.
THE PLOT
The movie takes the viewers to a small island is called Vamanapuri where men are all dwarves due to an old curse, but all women are of normal height (what a twist for the Gullivers travels).
Six officers of the Indian Navy swim to this island when their helicopter crashes. Two of them are killed by the dwarfs as they considered any man of normal height as demons.
The other four tries to escape from the land without being noticed, when one of the officers, Hari (Prithviraj) falls in love with the youngest princess of the island, Radha (Mallika Kapoor) who is engaged to the nephew of the king, prince Gajendran (Undapakru).
With Radhas help, they manage to get into the palace, tying their feet up and thus disguising as dwarves. As long as a raft is being build for sailing across the sea, they have to survive!
AS A WHOLE
Prithviraj just does the minimum work in the movie and does not seem to create much of an impression at any moment. He does manage to overact on a number of occasions, may be its his style, or may the increasing number of flop movies that has gone into his head.
The major role among the dwarves is played by Undapakru who does an great job as the prince. Even if irritating at times, he has done a better job than any one else in the movie, especially when the movie tend to get boring (Well, what did you expect?).
Jagathy Sreekumar is good in the double role and Kalpana, Indrans and Jagatheesh doesnt have much to do too except for the humorous side. The large number of dwarves does their jobs, not perfectly, but well enough.
Mallika Kapoor looks really good in the movie, and it will not be a wonder if some of the youth comes to theatre to see her, was it some mind game to get some model from outside to attract the viewers? She has done a good job in the movie as a whole. There is not much to say about the others.
BOTTOMLINE
What I think is that it was not at all a poor effort, but the movie is not at all a family movie considering some of the dialogues. This is supposed to be a movie for the kids because it is not the elder ones who go to the theatre to see the dwarves and an unreal fantasy island which just got no chance to occur scientifically.
The way in which the final fight scene is made is almost ridiculous - this is what you call fight sequences? The other people keep flying here and there and Prithviraj keeps throwing spears. Not to talk much about the special effects - well what can we expect from a movie for kids?
The release and success of Thommanum Makkalum may have been a set back for the movie and Udayanaanu Thaaram, still going strong may have also affected the collection of the movie.
But still, there may some section of the audience who can find this movie great, but I just cant find this movie anywhere over the average mark. Well, if you can digest this movie, you may like it - its still running around here, may be not for long.....
