A good read

I’d heard a lot about this book-from newspaper reviews etc, but deferred buying it until it was released in paperback.

The book begins with the narrator discovering his desire for his wife suddenly gone, after 15 years of conjugal bliss. It then seamlessly switches from present day to flashback and back, and all the while the author keeps up a commentary on events in India at the time (it begins in the 80s).

The prose sort of flows easily and the style is reminiscent of a few other authors. His descriptions of the Himalayas are a bit like Ruskin Bond. I particularly liked the book being set in Delhi in the 80s; I haven’t come across that many novels set in this city.

Later however it begins to meander, with a contained sub-story set during the British Raj. I found that boring.

On the whole, the best parts of the book are, of course, when he explores his relationship with Fizz (his wife), during its ups and downs. Here, what rocks is the portrayal of a man deeply and passionately in love with his wife after several years of marriage.
