Ignoring the angry voices from various scholars, political leaders & students, HRD minister, Arjun Singh has approved the so termed communal reservation, at AMU, where 50% seats in PG disciplines will be reserved for muslims. Even the prominent historian & AMU Professor Irfan Habib who has a full backing of CPI(M) termed it as a minority appeasement. More fuel has been added to the flame by BJP terming it as a blot to secular character of the university, which itself has been proved as a blot to secular fabric of India after Gujarat riots. This is the same political group which announced reservation in Jamia Hamdard, & now it is stating that Arjun Singh should get Communal Award. This clearly shows the Firing nature of Political parties, who are not very much interested in development issues.
Whatever one may say, but section (5)of AMU act, clearly states to promote especially the education & cultural advancement of the muslims of India. Its a boon step for Muslims of India but we cant ignore the fact that the degrees will obviously lose some of its reputation. Who will prefer a MBA degree from a university with 75% reservation(50% for muslims, 20% for internals, 5% for sc/st).The reservation is very much advantageous to Muslims, & promotion of high education among them. But we cant ignore the fact that 50% reservation is very high not only to raise voices of the opposition in a country where Hindu-Muslim issues are hyped a lot but more importantly to devalue its degree. I agree that there are reservations in other colleges like St.Stephen. I do support resevation for muslims but 50% is too high. Infact it would be appreciated if it lowers the 50% reservation to an acceptable & appropriate extent.
