This is probably the most mediocre Central University. Though the university rules are rather strict about admission but the crowd is such a drawback that it nullifies everything.
The facilities are really excellent. There is even a cinema hall and a petrol pump not to speak of a multistoreyed library and a multistoreyed canteen . That part is superb but that is also the undoing of the university.
We have students from the most backward areas of UP , Bihar and West Bengal staying here for years on end doing virtually nothing but taking advantage of the ultra cheap housing and boarding facilities of the university and clinging to it like leaches.
Second thing Aligarh itself not being very famous for decency and rather more famous for communal riots even the local crowd is not that good. There is a lot of gundagardi on the campus and the elections to the students union is sometimes bloody.
The vice-chancellor is often a decent guy but he is virtually helpless, there is huge amount of favouritism and recruitment is often affected by that . The medical college is a bit of a face saver as the hospital and college both have good facilities but the same cannot be said about the faculty.
The engineering college is a big comedown and figures nowhere in the top ten engineering colleges. There is no co-education in most of the faculties consequently the wild instincts of the boys comes to the fore and there are numerous fights all over the campus everyday.
Some of the faculty buildings are really beautiful but perhaps that is about all that is good in the faculties. The library is huge and very rich but not well kept , it has lot of hidden treasures but few students make efforts to unearth them. The reading room though is very very good and probably the best I have seen till date.
The canteen serves very very cheap food. Unbelievably cheap food is served here and it is huge but hygiene is something most alien to the canteen.
Overall not very good atmosphere and neither good faculty though a lot of facilities are there.So if you are serious about your studies this is not the place for you but if you just want to have a good time and that in little money AMU is the place for you.
