Expectations: Actor Vir Das started his film career by doing one scene in Akshay Kumar - Katrina Kaif starrer filmNamaste London. That one scene opposite Rishi Kapoor was loved by film lovers and thus in the following years, we witnessed the gradual growth of his screen appearance which recently reached to hero based roles. Very few actors like Mumtaz, Mithun Chakraborty, Irrfan Khan, K.K Menon, Nawazuddin and a few more have achieved stardom by going through this sort of transformation from a one scene to lead roles in Hindi films. Along with films, Vir is also known for his superb stand up acts, which displays his brilliant comic timing. These comic antics were eventually displayed in films likeDelhi Belly, Go Goa Gone and few more. Thus, whenever Vir did a lead role one expected the film to be an out and out comical entertainer. Sadly, his choice of films doesnt do justice to his comical power, but looking at the promo of his latest filmAmit Sahni Ki List, looks like finally, he is in his comfort zone and will please his fans by giving a good rom-com. So lets find out, whetherAmit Sahni Ki List will manage to do justice to the potential of Vir Das or might end up among those films which fails to tickle the funny bone.
Story: Amit Sahni Ki List is a story of Amit(Vir Das) who, after getting dumped by his first girlfriend decides to make a list of all the qualities he seeks in a perfect girl. Amit keeps hunting for his perfect girl based on the list he made but fails miserably. Finally, comes Mala(Vega Tomotia), who is totally opposite of what Amit is, and later they get engaged. After the engagement, enters Devika(Anindita Nayar) who is the perfect dream girl Amit has been waiting for as per his list. What happens next is what the entire film is all about.
Screenplay & Technicalities: The story line is very good as per the need of a perfect romantic comedy. The situations and story narration is great, but screenplay fails to do justice to it. The scenes are either abruptly placed or lacked the intensity in it. The situations are comical yet, you fail to laugh or even in the emotional scenes where you fail to connect with the feelings of the lead protagonists. There are few comical moments in the weak first half(which could have been a great) which keeps you glued to the film, but its the second half of the film which turns out to be a better part of the movie. Scenes like Vir trying for bungee jumping, Vir in a dilemma, Vir forcefully trying to do a breakup, the breakup consultant scene and few more keeps you entertained in the film. The biggest problem in this rom-com is in the initial parts where the dates and breakups turns out to be lame instead of being funny. Also, the conviction factor is missing. Camera work is fine and goes with the flow of the film.
Music & Direction: Music in such films has to be good or enjoyable. Sadly, none of the songs do justice to the film and infact, ends up being the negative part of the film.
Director Ajay Bhuyan comes up with a good story line, which if properly handled would have ended up giving us a good romantic comedy. Sadly, his writers deceived him over the moments and he himself could not do proper justice to the film. The film is like its heros list, which is perfect on papers, but misses its magic.
Performances: Vir Das does a decent job and performs well with the help of his comic timings and funny acts. Though, he could have done much better. Vega Tamotia is sweet and charming. She does proper justice to her role. Anindita Nayar looks beautiful, but ends up delivering a plastic type of performance. Kavi Shastri lends good support.
So bol meriFilmi Khopdi iss film mein kitna hain Dum?
Dum? Well the movie on paper has more potential than on silver screen. Its a decent romantic comedy with good story line attached to it. Sadly, the screenplay lacks the conviction as well as entertaining factor due to which this perfect list gets smudged, leaving behind blurry impressions.
