If you are a vidarbhian then you have have very few choices about the universities.
Few years ago Nagpur university enjoyed the top spot but lost its crown to Amravati university due to carruption and well known degree scandal.
I think Amravati University failed to make most of the opportunity.
I completed my graduation from this university.
Here is a sectionwise review:
Courses offered
Although there is good veriety of courses like environmental science, industrial chemistry, etc., there is very little awareness about these courses among the students. Students prefer these courses only when they fail to secure their admission in other streams. But University did its job by introducing these courses. It also provided reasonably good infrastrcture for these specilised courses.
But like other universities, syllabus is not updated regularly. In case of computer related courses, this becomes unfruitful.
Colleges
University does have some good and reputed names of colleges under its belt. One of them I Shri Shivaji Sc College. Its a very good college and offers quality education with proper infrastructure. Some other colleges are Ramkrishna (HVPM), Kesarbhai Lahoti (B COM) and Brijlal Biyani Sc College. All these colleges are realy good. When I left Amravati in 2002, various others colleges were started mushrooming in the city.
Quality of education
Some colleges like Shivaji sc, really offer good quality education but some are too bad. In university, post grad courses are well taught. Ultimately whole thing depends upon the teaching staff and not the system. So, If you are in Ramkrishna, you’ll get good teaching in computers as compare to other colleges. So look out for the stream you want to take and then decide the college.
Fees & other expences
When it comes to fees, Amravati scores 10 out of 10. Fees are very low. Other expences like living and food expences are also low. You can easily get accomodation anywhere in the city. People are very cooperative (like me :) ).
City Life
Amravati comes second to Nagpur in terms of development. City has got good theators like Panchasheel, Rajlaxmi, Prabhat & Chitra. Amravati is famous for ’Amba devi Temple’ . HVPM ( Hanuman Vyayam Prasarak Mandal) is asia’s second largest sport center. Many students come here to learn various sports from all around the country. There are hillstations like Chikhaldara & Muktagiri which attracts considerable amount of visitors. Marathi is the prominant language.
Last words
At last, if you can’t afford to live in Nagpur, Pune or Mumbai, consider Amravati University. It provide fair quality of education coupled with good infrastructure. If you are tight on budget, it will be a good choice.
