The following extracts are taken from “MODERN BHAGWAD GEETA” . Bhagwad Gita is one of the sacred scriptures of Hindus. It imparts the knowledge of the Self and answers two universal questions: Who am I, and how can I lead a happy and peaceful life in this world of dualities. It is supposed to be a long discourse by Lord SriKrishna to Arjun running into 18 Chapters.
Here, I was just wondering what advice would SriKrishna give to Arjun on the aspect of "buttering" or sycophancy to get your work done. p.s. I do not intend to hurt the sentiments of anyone.

Arjun asks :
My Lord!! When I was in school, our teacher (Miss Dronacharya) favoured Yudhishtir even though I was more strong and intelligent!! So what is it that he had, which I did not?
Krishna answers :
Cant you see? He was good at MASKA POLISH!!! Did you notice that he always fluttered around the teacher? He praised the teacher even when she didn’t look at her best!! He used "yes mam" atleast once in 10 seconds!! He used to get "roses" and "cards" for the teacher while you sat and watched!!! What else can you expect?

My promotion was due in the next appraisal. One of my colleagues, Karna, was also a contender. My boss was a difficult-to-please personality. Unless he agreed, it would be a case of a slip between the cup and the lip. So why was it that even though I was more hard working, still Karna got a promotion?
Krishna laughs:
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind.... MASKA CHASKA!!! He did every work for your boss right from getting his xeroxes to booking his hotel and flight tickets for his official tour. He carried his laptops and even did filing and mail handling for him. Who else could be the winner except him?

Oh My Lord!! Is it wrong then to “BUTTER” or "flatter" someone and get my work done? Krishna answers:
1) What is wrong? Helping someone whether with a selfish intent or not. Put yourself in the shoes of your manager. Don’t you think you will like getting the help?
2) What is wrong? Praising someone? Put yourself in the sandals of that teacher. Wont you love it if someone praises you no end?
Essentially, it boils down to winning the game, by hook or by crook.

Its not right either.
1) It’s the wrong way to get what you want. Cmon, play a fair game.
2) Its wrong to praise or help someone without meaning to
3) Its wrong to be selfish

So then, dear Krishna, what do I do? Should I do "buttering" or not?
Krishna answers
You are born on this earth to work. Why think of the “fruits” and the "butter"? Why worry about buttering or non buttering? If someone butters, let him do that. If you can also butter, you can go ahead and compete with him as long as you dont hurt anyone in the process!! Else, take a deep breath and continue your work.

Fine!! You need not butter anyone, just go take a piece of bread and spread Amul Butter on it and eat it !!!

Did you know that she is soon going to enter the Guinness Book for being the longest running ad campaign ever ( from 1966 )
