Note: I got really tired of requesting for a category since past one week for Amul Ice Cream to no avail. So here I am with review in wrong category again!
I am one of those weird people who don’t enjoy the most obvious things that the whole world just LOVES! A majority of people do for sure! Jaise, every time the month of May arrives with mango mania sweeping the country, I screw up my nose and say I don’t really like the king of fruits leading to shocked expressions all around me. Another such thing that almost made Mayunk want to divorce me is ice creams. I just somehow never developed a taste for this thanda padarth available in multitude of flavours. And when I did eat ice cream it was usually chocolate flavoured one ONLY.
I would try a chickoo or coffee walnut one at awesome Natural’s in Mumbai and then rare scoop of butter scotch or mint flavours at the super popular Corner House in Bangalore. Then for a dinner party we were supposed to have, husband said lets get Amul ice cream and I screwed up my nose again saying naah! I had had Amul couple of times in Mumbai and just not liked the texture… it had this weird powdery taste. But his word prevailed and the first two packs of Amul ice cream were home.
One flavour was Orange and another was Rajbhog. Do I see you guys frowning just hearing the names? All ye people who haven’t gone beyond chocolate, vanilla and butterscotch, welcome to fundoo flavours to be tried n tasted and THEN enjoyed if you like them. Let me list a few we have tried.
The orange ice cream was yummy with its creamy orange flavour and the bright colour of course. (Abha’s twist - Try the orange ice cream with chocolate sauce and vice versa too if you find a parlour that has orange sauce. The bitter sweet taste is absolutely wicked and worth a shot).
Rajbhog was the ice cream variant of your mithai with lotsa dry fruits and the works. Its really tasty and different (Mayunk’s Twist - You can serve it along with a bit of crushed biscuit and a chocolate wafer for the neat look)
Litchi is one of those rare fruits which flood the market only for a month or so with their prickly outside and juicy insides! Now you can taste it all year through with Amul ice creams. The ice cream that almost looks like the boring vanilla makes you ask for more with its very real taste and pieces of litchi that become a part of alternate spoonfuls that you are gorging on.
(Abha’s Twist – Run the ice cream in your mixie once without adding any water etc and pour a little in a tall glass… approx half a glass. Top it up with Sprite and Voila! You have an exotic Litchi mocktail that you would pay 110 bucks for at your fav resto). Do keep a stirrer in the glass when you serve it and get ready to hear the Oohs and Aahs from your guests.
The Cappuccino flavoured ice cream is a good alternative to people who are still like the puraani Abha eating only chocolate ice cream. Its coffee flavoured with a dash of chocolate taste to it. (Mayunk’s Twist – Add biscuit powder, top it up with a bit of chocolate or butterscotch sauce and sprinkle a l’il bit Bournvita on it for a delicious looking dessert that you will want a repeat of!)
Priced at around Rs.120 for 750ml for these exotic flavours, though not cheap these ice creams are total value for money. As of now, in most cities Amul has a one free on one offer which makes it a very reasonable buy since you get two packs in the price of one.
They are available at all super markets and your local kirana guy, so you know where to find em for that quick dessert you feel like binging on or serving your guests.
The old adage of “Be Indian, Buy Indian” has never been so deliciously patriotic!
Go on… take a lick… have a bite…
