I was eagerly awaiting this movie because for anyone who is a pageant freak, this movie is indeed a history making event. Imagine...Miss Universe 2000 - Lara Dutta, and Miss World 2000 - Priyanka Chopra, in the Same Movie! I was hypnotized by the lush ads of the two beauties gyrating in the sand to ’’Rabah Ishq Na Hove’’. So I went to see this two days ago but the movie was so bad, I wondered if it even warranted a critique. Well, here it goes.
Kajal (Lara Dutta) is Raj’s (Akshay Kumar) childhood friend, they grow up, grow apart, and find each other again because Jiya (Priyanka Chopra) is one drunk slut who can’t leave Raj alone until he is forced to marry her. Guess what, Jiya is actually Kajal’s sister in law. Thats pretty much the story. The first half was such a big headache & whats up with dubbing Lara Dutta’s voice? HOW DARE THEM DO THIS TO HER!!! The nerve! It was her great voice & articulate diction that bagged her the Miss Universe 2000 title.
Anyway, lets talk about the most interesting aspects of the movie -- Like the girls, and what they wear. Lara has a fantastic slim figure that any model would envy. She shows it off wearing low rider hip hugger jeans & the tiniest midriff tops. Her tight muscular belly & slender limbs are what made India win the Best in Swimsuit Award in the history of the Miss Universe pageant. For years India had to put up with being the ’’smart’’ chick but not really the sexy one. Well, Lara proved that you could be smart & sexy and she even beat out powerhouse Venezuela to the amazement of millions. This movie will prove at least that. Her acting skills are no Shabana Azmi but it will do. If you look like this woman, you too wouldn’t need to act. Just wear less clothes & look gorgeous & the audience will do the rest, right?
Priyanka -- Out of all the Indian Titleholders, Priyanka is probably the most marketable second only to Aishwarya. Her huge luminous eyes, full lips, and warm dusky skin oozes sex on screen. Priyanka Chopra IS the definitive Sex Kitten. And her body is in much better shape than Bipasha Basu who seems to be sporting a huge belly & big thighs these days. She plays the naughty Femme Fatale quite well & I will predict that this will be her niche & she will be typecasted in these kinds of roles for the next few years.
Akshay Kumar - Again, Bollywood is a male fantasy industry where guys like Akshay who is clearly TOO OLD to play college men still play such roles alongside young girls like Lara & Priyanka. I wonder WHY Madhuri Dixit is deemed ’’too old’’ in Bollywood yet Akshay Kumar, Anil Kapoor, and Shahrukh Khan are still playing guys half their age. What a tragedy to think that we’ve been brainwashed into thinking that men can never be old, wrinkled, bald , and fat but women MUST play mothers by the time they hit 28. It’s stupid and very insulting to the human intelligence. And we wonder WHY the Western world can’t accept our outmoded & outdated ideas. We like to blame America for its double standards but our movies speak for themselves. They are sexist & biased.
On a lighter note -- Johnny Lever as always, makes me laugh but not even his cheap stunts can save this dismal film. His gags were just excruciating to watch & at times, out of place.
My final analysis is -- Watch this movie if you are just into watching young beautiful women wear skimpy clothing. Forget it if you’ve outgrown this stage. Anyway, I’m probably going to buy this DVD for the novelty of owning a movie with both Lara & Priyanka in it. Plus it’s a great motivator. After watching the women in this movie, I now realize that I haven’t dieted enough.
