This is a film for those who love nonsensical comedy.
Its a really old and run of the nill story and if its a proper structured story you are looking for, you are not going to find it in this film. But what has been done with this story is what is different about the film. It does not concentrate its efforts towards any concrete ending as such, or a climax but builds on the fact that the audience know the rather obvious story and taking it from there to make each event or sequence in the film is treated for comedy.
One could easily put this film away as one of those ’trying hard’ type of comedies. But after viewing the film a couple of times I noticed the small detailing the film has. The film is very well made and great pain has been taken to cover all the little details right from costume to sets and the dialogues.
The dialogues especially are deliberately unconnected at times and follow a typical urban urchin language. The language is typical with ’’aailaa’’, ’’ooiymaa’’ and ’’cha-mailaa’’.
The facial expressions too are the ones we EXPECT (though it may not necessarily be typical) from the characters portrayed by Aamir khan and Salman khan.
Having all the elements that go to make typical masala movies, the film is tied together by a totally fantastic performance by Paresh rawal in a double role.
The extras in the film too are portrayed to have meaningful participation. though just.
Shakti kapoor as crime master gogo is a riot, and adds twists to the tale at the most unexpected moments. In what can only be called a bizarre role, his part as a gangster is very comic amidst all the sugarpuppy love sequences between the 2 couples in the film and the unrelenting efforts of ’teja’ and ’robert’to get rid of ram bajaj (paresh).
The songs in the film are entertaining and though unnecessary are well structured to break the linearity (if any) of the story line.
Costumes are done tastefully and quite creatively and the colours too are fresh yet not jarring. The film lends itself a slightly retro feel and it fits in well with the story, since its a very often used old typical bollywood storyline remember.
A must for all those who like small detailing in films. A typical example is when aamir and salman get the upper hand in the final showdown. Aamir is taking the case of each one in the scene while salman has the pistol. Aamir approached Viju kote(robert) and pulls at his suspenders and releases them. As robert winces in pain, teja (paresh 2nd) who is the immediate next in line is seen (if you are looking) quickly slipping of his own suspenders.
Its a film that can be enjoyed as many times you see it since one invariably notices something new each time. One of the finer comedies from bollywood.
