I was in Bangalore this month to experience my first South Indian wedding. Needless to say, being a textile designer myself, I was blown away by the costumes that all the people wore to the wedding, especially what my friends, i.e.-the grooms, side of the family wore. I have never seen such beautifully crafted dhotis or such intricately woven sarees in my life! on inquiring about the clothes, most of the family members avoided answering my question and wanted to keep the source a secret! this infact made me all the more curious ... absolutely hilarious!
Fortunately my enthusiastic friend told me that all their clothes were custom made at Angadi. I went to Angadi expecting a boutique and saw a full fledged 3 (or 4, I dont remember) building in front of me. I was in awe of the variety, innovation and the quality of the sarees there. A guy called ponnu, punu...or something, showed me some very rare pieces designed and woven in Angadi... I must say, I felt proud that textile designers like that exist in India.
The owners mother was kind enough to actually talk to me, take me through the store and also explain me the history and the different types of varieties in Angadi. I unfortunately did not get to meet the owner, who is also the design head but I definitely will do so when I get the opportunity to go to Bangalore next.
I picked a few sarees just because I never thought those weaves were even possible!! There is a silk and khadi saree mix saree that took my breath away. Though it now is added to my wifes collection (though she hardly wears sarees!), it is my reference textile.
This is a looong testimonial but I must add this, as an end note, most Angadi products are not for everyone. but if you understand textiles and have taste, you MUST visit this place. Also if shopping, try going in the afternoon or morning because evenings are really crowded there.
