Shankar strikes again..

...though not so hard. hey MS-ians am back after a long hiatus.. The reason was, among others, my studies and my awful laziness.. haha. so I have to restart it all somewhere, and then happened to see this movie Anniyan.. and I liked it, to an extent, especially being a Shankar fan.

Lets get into character.

ABOUT THE MOVIE

The hype got to it looong before it was released, being the costliest movie ever made in south india, and it took a full 1 year to shoot. shankar, as usual left no stones unturned to present a full blown extravaganza for his viewers, but one does suspect that he turned a stone too much. But it has too many colors, and being a story about a person suffering from MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder), a rare mental condition, and at the same time wants to save the country (as in many Shankar movies) he has succeeded to explain whats happening in a down to earth way. But he hasgone overboard adding too much color to it, to an extent it seems illogical at times. but superb performances from all the cast members has reduced this to an extent. The flip side is the stereotyping.. Shankars usual guy-wants-to-end-corruption-and-save-the-country type of movie, which has led to a loose storyline and a confusion in the end.

CAST AND CHARACTERS

Vikram as Ambi/Anniyan/Remo

He rocks! as superbly performed all the three alters. As ’Ambi’ Ramanathan, a pakka brahmin lawyer, who works like clockwork, and goes over the edge sticking to rules who hates all sort of corruption and injustice and wages war against all wrongdoers, creating more problems for himself, and is hopelessely in love with Nandini. As Anniyan, who punishes wrongdoers, giving them death sentences as written in the ’Garudapurana’ according to the crimes they have committed. As anniyan comes his best performance, where he is totally menacing, and inhumanely cruel. Remo, who is in love with Nandini, the alter born out of the need to express Ambi’s love for Nandini. But one wonders what was the need for Remo, save the songs.

He is totally at ease in all the characters, and changes expressions from one alter ego to the other effortlessly. He also looks awesome, too good. especially as Remo.

Sadha as Nandini She is ok, but has not much to do, except being the reason for Remo. She also acts well during the scene where Anniyan chases to kill her

Prakashraj as the DCP Sorry but I could not remember his screen name. but he too, is at his acting best (as always) and has great moments to offer. he is excellent during the scene where his brother gets killed by Anniyan

Vivek Is the life of the movie.. he has great hilarious moments to offer. beig Ambi’s friend and Prakashraj’s sidekick, he offers spontaneous comedy at the right time, especially in the first half. the scenes with prakash raj where he goes for investigations are too good.

PLOT

Ambi traumatised by events in his childhood, wants to get revenge on all wrongdoers, but in the legal way. Which always lands him up in trouble. He sends a message to Anniyan, through a website, where Anniyan takes up the cause and awards the right death punishment for the culprits. Prakashraj and vivek investigate te murders but are clueless. they then try track down the killer through the website, and a susupense awaits them. In the meantime, Ambi, who is madly in love with Nandini, and is turned down by her, feels if he’s hip and dashing she will fall for him.. hence the birth of Remo. Who woos her with all sort of things. in the end, all three alters come togetther, and leads to the climax.

MUSIC

Letdown. the picturisations of the songs were awesome, all of them, but except ’Remo’ and ’Kannum kannum’ no tune seems to stick.

WHAT I FELT

The movie as a whole is great, but Shankar has gone overboard with his ’save the country’ theme. some muurders committed, one feels that there were far greater crimes that merit the death penalty. Also, there is a confusion in the climax, as if the director did not know where to end the movie. one also feels that the problem of corruption cannot be solved no matter how hard Anniyan tries. Then comes the usual ’lovey-dovey-nonsense scenes where it seems if you courier a truckload o roses, any girl will fall in love with you! There are plenty of hilarious scenes, especially Vikrams love letter, which is written like an application, with resume included. The picturisation is too good, and gives the movie its life. The stunt scenes are too much, with too much ’Matrix-ism’ in them. The director has conveyed the concept of MPD well, and about which full details can be found in Sydney Sheldon’s ’Tell me your dreams’.

BOTTOMLINE

If you want 3 hours of entertainment, Shankar style, go for it. Leave out the part of saving the country and all. but if you worry about corruption and patriotism too much, well, call Anniyan to help you.

Cheers!
