Hi, I don’t have much to talk about this movie. It was my
girlfriend who forced me to watch this. And I was hearing very good comments
about this from some of my friends, especially from those who were not used to
English movies. Right from the movie Gentleman, Shankar as the director could
prove that he had techniques and technology for story telling with timely use
of good music scores. I took the risk, watched the movie. The story line goes
like this. A person has got three different personalities. ‘The Weak’, ’The
Lover’ and finally ‘The Killer’ (All the three, played by Vikram). ‘The Weak’
creates humor, captures the sympathy and feels the agony. Lover loves, plays
and entertains. Killer does the killing; just the Killing. An intelligent
Police Officer Chases the Killer, but Killer gets the Support of the People and
comes out with out many scratches as he is proved to be an abnormal by a
typical ‘Tamil Movie Court’. A girl (played by Sada) runs in between these 3 different
forms of male leads and shakes her hip. Vivek does the comedy job playing the
subordinate to the Chaser/Police officer (played by Prakash Raj). Some social
issues like corruption among government officers is shoved into the movie plot .Hero
in the suitable avatar cleans up the mess taking the story to an eventual beautiful
end. That’s all about ‘The Anniyan’.
Story is so funny and defying logic and one can forget about this, as there was
never any space for logic in mainstream Tamil movies. Please don’t ask me, how
the color of a persons hair changes when he gets a psychic transformation.
Action was pretty good (thanks to Kill Bill’, ’Matrix movies). Let me not
mention the MTV styled lightning stunts which would even make your eyes sick.
Story line of ‘The Intelligent Police-chasing- Intelligent-Killer’ idea is
shamelessly stolen from the Hollywood flick The bone
collector starred by Denzyl Washington and Angelina Jollie. If it’s an old
crime thriller and its illustrations which the protagonist follows to get his
work done, in the original movie, here it’s a book on some pre-Vedic punishment
systems written in Sanskrit. In Both cases, it happens in sequence; to make the
investigator’s life merrier. All the songs were beautifully shot in exotic
locations and some complicated shots and sequences like, ‘the traffic jams in
Chennai’, ‘the train journey’; ‘the ice-block-torture scene’ was brilliantly
shot. Vikram was pretty good in his character transformations (over acting??
nothing wrong in Tamil) from the weak to strong, strong to weak, weak to
stylish especially in the physical metamorphosis during the climax fights with
the police man. Thanks to Jim Carrey for that comic ‘Me, Myself and Irene” which
was possibly used by Shankar for guiding Vikram on this stuff. In short,
nothing new other than few songs, few fight sequences and a pinch of, suspense.
That’s all about this hyped out movie and what else one possibly would expect
from a popular Tamil movie? This is not the film for you if you are an average Hollywood
cine fan. You would better don’t waste your money. Right Choice for you if you
are a typical Indian Action Movie lover. Go and experience a color full,
adrenaline pumping movie magic.
