The Hype
Well, Anniyan has finally, got released after a lot of hype and hoopla. The movie being named as Robot, the costliest South Indian film ever, Kamal Haasan as the lead actor, prospective clash with Chandramukhi and what not !!!
The Story
Vikram portrays Rules Ramanujam, fondly called Ambi. Ramanujam is an honest lawyer and lives by the book, for even the minute and frivolous matters. He witnesses careless acts of law breaking in a single day, which culminate in a persons death. Ambi gets frustrated by the lack of discipline in the society and his own helplessness. Sada plays Nandini for whom Ambi yearns. He proposes to her in a proper manner. But, Nandini turns him down saying he is boring and not cool. Out of these troubles of Ambi arises Multiple Personality Disorder, and a punisher - Anniyan and a lover boy - Remo are born. Prakash Raj gets down to hunt Anniyan. The rest of the story is about how the different faces of Ambi come to light, how he is cured and what is the future of Anniyan.
The Cast
Vikram is equally awesome in his portrayal of a Iyengar, a ramp walk Model and a ruthless Killer. Watch out for the personality-switch sequence, which only Vikram can do of the current crop. Sada is ravishing and beautiful, but is unrealistic as an Iyengar girl. Prakash Raj does justice to his role. Vivek is on a roll in this movie and brings the laughter with an effortless ease, reminiscent of the Kushi days. Nedumudi Venu, Nazar are wasted in supporting roles.
The Music
Harris Jayaraj dishes out foot tapping, rollicking songs, but still leaves one thinking of ARR. Songs in the first half, slow down the tempo. But, in the second half, they merge more with the story, with Andagakka having a superb timing, after which the story wheers towards a customary Shankar flashback and the action packed climax. Lyrics by Vairamuthu are a big let down. Especially in Kannum Kannum Nokia.
The Action
For the first time, aped Hollywood stunts look equally breath taking in an Indian movie. And, there is a hero who doesnt fight, as if he is strung by two threads. The movements, punch and power are sure to blow you down. The killings are a bit too violent and gruesome.
The Shankar factor
Now, this is what makes the movie special. Grand locations, stunning visuals, computer graphics and a not to be missed social message. The message shows why India has not yet realised its potential of a super-power.
The movie is a real entertainer and Shankar has got the commercial flavour just right. Will become the biggest hit of 2005.
