Media can make or break, and in this composer’s case its somehow always been break break break!!
This article is not to show people where he is from, and how much he struggled to be where he is today, but it has been written to justify all his acts which have been pointed at. All right, so I probably won’t be able to justify all of them, but you probably get the picture.
Plagiarism – so connected to Anu Malik, sure it was done in the past, and he definitely tried to put it all behind him. You would probably be able to understand that by reading his or listening to his interviews instead of calling it plain garbage. However, his reputation was so perfectly spoilt by the never dying media that no matter what he did, his songs always seemed to resemble someone else’s and never the other way around. And it wasn’t that he ws the only one doing so, he wasn’t alone, everyone knows that many of the legendary composers too have cheated. Music produced in bulk, it had to resemble something or the other, it was expected
But coming from humble beginnings, Anu Malik could never get over the inbuilt fear he had always experienced with his father- the fear of losing a film, a ‘banner’. It was impossble, either come up with 3 new songs for the next day or lose the film. Instead of completely disappearing, deep down somewhere that fear exists till today within him. It was hard for a young boy to enter this industry when all the camps had already been formed. His father had begged around for work and everyone had labeled him as a ‘bothersome man who wastes our time’. The label stuck, and it was very hard for Anu to lift that label off his shoulders. He struggled, and somehow is still struggling to hold firm ground, and whenever he manages to, some other allegation comes up and rips his whole world apart. People who probably never had any sense in music started pointing fingers at him in public, just because they heard it on the radio or read it in the newspaper.
Who can forget the forgetful film Auzaar, where he had been accused of blatantly lifting the Macarena tune and using it as his own. Anu believed in his talent, but he certainly never wanted to do something like this. Then why did he do it? He was forced too. The music company, forced him to do it, and even though he refused, he was left with no choice, and when the song was finally released all the blame was put squarely on his shoulders and the company cleanly backed ou of the whole messy situation.
This interestingly has mostly always been the reason for his so called remixing status.
Ismail Darbar’s Chand chupa badal mein (Hum Dil de Chuke Sanam) was actually an Anu Malik tune- Dil Kyun Dhadakta Hain (Jaanam). I wonder why this piece of information was never mentioned.
A R Rehman, the creative genius isn’t washed in milk and honey either- Suniyo Re (Saathiya) is quite a nice mixture of Everybody backstreet’s back (Backstreet boys) and One love (Blue). It may not sound true (hey that rhymes), but if you manage to listen closely you probably might see my point.
Anus theme of Sohni Mahiwal has quite always been mimicked whenever there was a need for Punjabi backsgrounds in recent films.
The song Bheegey Honth Tere (Murder) is definitely not a copied tune. Definitely. If you go to see it, then every tune every composer has ever made definitely has something in common coz for God’s sake they were all made from the same 7 notes!
The song Payali Chunmun (Virasat) is again not copied. I too have heard the rumour, and it’s exactly that, a rumour. Priyadarshan the director had faith in Anu and that’s why he took him at a time when he was almost down and out. Anu Malik was very proud of this song and he mentioned it every where he could. If he had copied the tune, why would he be so proud of it as if it were his own creation? The fact remains, that if the tune had been copied, Priyadarshan wouldn’t have repeated him for his next film- Hera Pheri.-
I hope everyone remembers the’cute’ singer Adnan Sami who sang the song Mehbooba Mehooba (Ajnabee) for Anu Malik. Well for starters a good 70% of the public still doesn’t know that this song was Anu’s and they believe it was Adnan’s. All the singers go around the world, singing other people’s songs and never once mention the names of the creators. And by this I mean all the top singers. This is a well known fact that all the top singers who throw parties and invite their kind and kin, later sit in a circle and mimick and make fun of the people (composers) who gave them their bread and butter. SICK!
We always manage to respect those people who will take around 3 days to make one song, and act like they have done a big thing. And then we will always have those people who are treated like machines and made to spew out countless numbers which probably will be valued only after the composers death, and by then my friends its obviously too late.
25 years- a long time to survive, exactly how many generations has Anu Malik seen? Not an easy task to fulfill without talent. Don’t you agree? I could probably go on and on, maybe even write a book on this.
I haven’t been hired to do this, I am just your everyday teenager, but I couldn’t stand watchin my guru, my idol go down like this. I unfortunately have managed to see the real side of bollywood, and that’s why I wrote this review the way I did. Rip this review if you like, I am waiting for your comments. It will be fun to answer them, because I have my facts and I hope to correct some of yours.
