.........................ANAND and ANUPAMA were two of HRISHIKESH MUKHERJI’s greatest films and which touched and moved you like no other film did.I loved ANUPAMA the first time I watched it..................it was one of the most interesting and brilliant potrayl of father-daughter relationship, , the film was one of those few films which was inspired by real-life story....................and HRISHIKESH MUKHERJI’s compassionate outlook on human relationships made ANUPAMA........................a RARE GEM.The film comprised of some great actors, DHARMENDRA, SHARMILA TAGORE, DEVAN VERMA, TARUN BOSE, SHASHIKALA, DURGA KHOTE, DAVID.The film had music by HEMANT KUMAR....................and it was one of the highlight of the film.ANUPAMA.....................was one of the most accomplished works of HRISHIKESH MUKHERJI and I read somewhere that he dedicated the film to his mentor and guru BIMAL ROY.I have watched ANUPAMA quite a few times, it remains one of my all time favourite films....................because of the storytelling, execution, acting, music and the way the film evoked emotions in you without being melo-dramatic.
STORY...................the film primarily revolved and focussed on the relationship between MOHAN SHARMA(TARUN BOSE) and his daughter UMA(SHARMILA TAGORE)...................whom he hates coz he holds her responsible for his wife’s death during child birth.His constant dislike for her.......................creates havoc in the life of UMA and she grows up into unusually withdrawn and easily frightened woman, she normally starts staying in a shell...................and doesn’t interact with anyone.As the story progresses MOHAN SHARMA, along with his freinds and daughter goes to OOTY................for few days where UMA meets ANITA(SHASHIKALA), ASHOK(DHARMENDRA)and his family who take an instant liking to UMA..................and they all coax her to come out of her shell, but eventually its ASHOK who falls in love with her..............and brings a change in her life and mindset................which gives UMA the strenght to leave her house in the end against her fathers wishes to marry ASHOK.
ACTING........................was simply OUTSTANDING in the film.It was a case of perfect casting and everyone suited their role to the T.SHARMILA TAGORE as UMA was splendid........................one of her best performance of all times, coz she does not speak much in the film, whatever she conveyed...................her turmoil, love, affection, fear was through her eyes and expressions, she looked very beautiful too.TARUN BOSE as her father was great, his expressions and body language were perfect..................you could see and feel his dilemma, on his face.DHARMENDRA as ASHOK..................was really good too, one of his most under-rated performances..................he shared some beautiful moments with UMA, and they had perfect chemistry.SHASHIKALA..................was the complete contrast to SHARMILA TAGORE, in her role..................while UMA was quite and subdued, she was loud and very talkative, but very good neverthless.DEVAN VERMA, DAVID, DURGA KHOTE and the rest of the cast.....................was great too.
MUSIC.....................of the film was beautiful.HEMANT KUMAR gave some memorable songs for this film, songs like YA DIL KI SUNO DUNIYA WALON, KUCH DIL NE KAHA, DHEERE DHEERE MACHAL AAE DILE BEQARAAR, BHEEGI BHEEGI FIZA, KYON MUJHE ITNI KUSHI DE DI................each song was a gem, musically as well as lyrics wise...................KAIFI AZMI wrote brilliant lyrics for the film.Its difficult to pick one favourite song................coz all were great and picturised well too, eso KUCH DIL NE KAHA..................it was so beautiful, cinematography was awesome, SHARMILA’s expression were beautiful...............a great justice done to the song.
MEMORABLE SCENE.........................for me the most memorable scene in the film is the one where after reading the book written by DHARMENDRA’’ANUPAMA’’she is filled with hope and courage...............and decides to leave her house to marry AsHOK, inspite of her father’s dislike for him................the whole seen was so touching, it will bring a lump to your throat................when UMA goes to her father, touches his feet and asks him’’MAIN JAO PITAJI’’................the expression and dialouge delivery, was just brilliant...................and then in the end when the father comes to wish her daughter who is leaving with a tear in his eye................watch it.H.M had such brilliant control over his art................and it showed in thst scene.
DIRECTION...................was brilliant thats what made this film a CLASSIC.I am always in awe of this mans talent...................the way he showed relationships on screen, the way he conveyed emotions through his characters, the way he handeled his characters.......................the way he unfolds the story is all so good .ANUPAMA WAS A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF THAT.A genius named HRISHIKESH MUKHERJI at work.
ANUPAMA is one of the best films to have come out in HINDI CINEMA, its a masterpiesce because of its poignant moments, its a film which should be watched by all.....................REALLY a great film, if you haven’t seen it yet, watch it on VCD\DVD....................to know the brilliance of cinema of that time.
