Ok, imagine you are heading towards the library on a warm, wintery afternoon. You choose this book from a library as you read the cover page of the novel and find that it talks a bit about relationship between two urban couple. The curiosity factor regarding the continuation of the story eclipses the insignificant limitations of the story. And in the end, when you finish the novel, there are a number of questions that are left unanswered. When your mind starts wondering the reason behind it, it still carries a joy of thinking more than the routine thoughts.
Anuranan – sur se sur milaane ka khel, this is what is the meaning of the word which Rahul Bose explains Riama Sen. Getting on to the story , we see the lives of two couple – Rahul (Rahul Bose)& Nandita (Rituparna Sengupta) and Amit (Rajat Kapoor) and Preeti (Raima Sen). Fate throws Rahul and Amit together who are transferred to India for Kanchanjunga project. Frequent interactions at the workplace and going to each other’s home lets the friendship extend towards the families too.
Rahul is a creative person totally in love with poetry, his wife, nature and peace. Nandita is chirpy, sweet and attractive better half whose personality extends beyond “Mrs. Rahul Chaterjee". To do away with the boredom, she even starts going to school to teach children. Rahul and Nandita have a great emotional connection and Nandita’s inability to conceive a child plays an occasional turbulence in their otherwise happily married life.
Amit is a bit too business minded and his mind is more towards sensex than his wife’s joys or thoughts. He is a bit too practical for his idealistic wife Preeti, who just bears it all with silence and a look of contempt. Her own individual personality is hidden away from the world, and she is a deep and sensitive person. You may find her eyes bespectacled with seriousness in a party but dancing in the moonlight, when she is all alone.
The four meet each other and interact often and find their lives taking a subtle turn. In this process, Preeti has more topics to share with Rahul that her own husband (nah, don’t conclude, she is not in love with him). It is just that she admires the beautiful relationship Rahul and Nandita share. And that paves a way for untold, dignified friendship between Rahul and Preeti.
The supposedly normal story takes an unexpected turn when Rahul goes on an expected trip to Kunchenjunga. During this time, even Amit goes to London. Preeti feels bored and pleads her husband to take her along with him for the trip but he refuses. And all of a sudden, she does something totally unexpected. The next 15 mts of the story are so fast that before it takes time to digest, the movie is over. And that is when your mind starts searching for answers.
There are not many songs in the movie. “Dole mora mann” is melodious and has a flavor of Bengali song. The background music is most of the time is laced by melodious sound of sitar. That makes it more real. There is one more thing interesting about it. Every time, one is looking at the picturesque nature, he or she gets so excited connecting with the beauty of nature with joy or love or thinking about their loved one. It is a feeling which we all have whenever we see something breathtaking. One of the best scenes is when the Kanchunjunga Peak blanketed with snow is bathed with moonlight on a full moon day. Cinematography is excellent and there is attention to the detail. The movie has liberally used poetry, right from Rahul Bose’s mom writing a letter to her son to singing songs or reading out poetry.
