I have been using AOL Instant Messenger since July 1999 and I must say I am really happy with the service. The biggest advantage of the messenger is its ease of use. The most used features are conveniently located on the IM window when you chat with your buddy. Apart from this one can find their friends by looking for them in the IM register according to their hobbies and interests. In the AOl 4.0 version one can also access games center if one wants to play games online , the file transfer comes with a helpful virus checker and the very helpful ( for US citizens) ticker tape on the bottom of your buddy list shows the latest stock and share prices.we can also set sounds and buddy alerts and the system prompts us when our buddies sign on. Of course, we can also indulge in file transfers to send our pictures to our friends.
In the AOL 4.0 version , they have introduced the talk feature. I have’nt spoken much online but when I have the transmission is not very clear, my american friends tell me its clear when they chat online to american ppl so I guess its our countries not very good bandwidth responsible for that.
All said and done, the AOL IM is a pretty kool chat tool. I even have MSN now and most of the features are common between them so one can say there is not much of difference but personally I prefer AOL for its ease of use.
One of the drawbacks was that there were’nt too many indians online at AOL and though the numbers of indians are picking up now , MSN and Yahoo! still have more indians online for chats, so I guess if ur gonna get online for chatting to fellow Indians then MSN & Yahoo! are better bets but my personal expereince shows that indians are’nt too good at online chats so you would’nt miss much if you don’t talk to indians.
AOl IM is a good s/w to download onto ur computer and a great way to make online friends.
