To be honest I did not want to watch Apharan, I was literally dragged to the cinema hall. I thought it would be the same cliched crime caper. But, ten minutes into the film and I realized how wrong I was. It is one of the most thought provoking films which have come out in recent times. This is a film about the biggest industry in Bihar - Kidnapping!!
It is about how a young man - whose father wants him to find his own bearings in life - gets embroiled in the big bad world of crime and politics and how he redeems himself.
Ajay Devgan and Nana Patekar are superb. Their scenes together simply light up the screen. The support cast provides more than ample support. Prakash Jha justifies his billing as one of the best socially relevant film - makers. The background score (I think by Wayne Sharpe) is one of the highlights of the enterprise.
Bipasha Basu -who has an insignificant role - is unimpressive. The lone song in the movie could also have been avoided.
All in all, for politically inclined and serious cinema watchers, this is a must see.
