Filthy Hospital

Here is a copy of an email I sent Mr Eapn the Head of Chennai Operations. I have to date not recieved a response. It has been over 10 days now.

Dear Mr Eapn,   My wife was admitted in your hospital from Tuesday to Wednesday this past week. I have several complaints regarding the way we were treated while we were there. In fact I raised these issues while I was there, however, no one took any action and my priority was to ensure my wife was moved out of the hospital as soon as possible. The first complaint is, whichever room we were in, we could always hear the nurses cont talking outside. There needs to be some sort of control on this. We first checked into the Female General ward. There were three female bathrooms, one not working, the one used was filthy. Not sure of the status of the third one.

I went to your front desk and verified if I could get another room. The waiting list in which our name was written stated that room 1223 was allotted to us. On asking the person at the front desk what was the problem with giving us the room, she stated that the people occupying the room had extended their stay. (The next morning this story changed to - the people had checked in 1.5 hours before us so they got priority in the room allotment. ) Finally he offered me a twin sharing room.

The Twin sharing bath room has blood stains. Sisters keep coming into the room every 10 odd minutes banging the door both while going in and coming out. My wife wasn’t even able to sleep. The night lamp also didn’t work in this room. The neighbours had phone on full blast and not even answering it. It started ringing early in the morning and just went on.   During my wife’s operation I was waiting in this room. I got so frustrated by the noise the nurses were making opening and closing the doors I finally went downstairs and asked for another room. This is when they told me the story of how the room was allotted to another patient) Finally they gave me a deluxe room. I went to inspect the room and I called and told them that the coffee table was filthy and I wanted it changed.   I moved to the Single room. The bedsheet that my wife was coved with and brought from the operation theatre had rust stains on it. The earlier mentioned table was not cleaned. Instead a newspaper was put on it. The cupboard shelves were filthy and rusted. The tumbler and jug were kept on this. I am sorry but rust and drinking utensils don’t go together. The fridge was stinking.   The dietian came and spoke to me and told me that at 1:30 food would be served. I waited. 2:30 I asked the nurse what was the delay. Finally warm mousambi juice was brought. My wife took it and it caused her a lot of pain. Finally, I asked them to take it back and bring something cold. It took till 3:00 and a very nasty call from the nurse before the drink was delivered.   At 5 pm melted ice-cream and warm mousambi juice was served! I finally check out because I believed that staying in the hospital was more injurious than going home.   There was also another issue with the ECG. My wife was made to wait outside the room because the doctor was busy eating. I have no problem with that, but you can also ask the patient to come later right? Anyway, the Doctor(?), Jai Anne without asking my wife for permission undressed her. She then forced my wife to lie down on an unclean bed and an oil stained pillow. After the whole activity, she didn’t even help my wife clean up instead was more keen that she leave.   All in all, I am very disappointed with the treatment we received and I don’t believe that the charges levied on us are justifiable. I am very disappointed to know that a hospital with such a reputation can perform so poorly. It has taken so long for your people to even get back to me about simple things. My wife’s pain has increased after the operation, when generally the pain is supposed to reduce drastically.   Please take the necessary action and get back to me. I am waiting for your response.   Warm regards,   Amit Jayakaran
