Apollo Gleneagles Hospital and Dr. Syamasis Bandyo

Gross negligence and incompetence of Apollo Gleneagles Hospital and Dr. Syamasis Bandyopadhyay and his team led to the death of our Baba

I am writing on behalf of my family following the tragic death of our father who passed away under care at on Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, Kadapara on 12th November 2024, Tuesday. My father was admitted in the hospital on 2nd November 2024, with high fever and joint pains. We have taken him in the emergency and after a brief discussion with doctor in the emergency ward they said that the symptoms are more likely of Chikungunya or Dengue but without test they cannot confirm so they need to admit him in the hospital. My elder sister and I agreed and admitted him in the hospital under the medical care of Dr. Syamasis Bandyopadhyay and his team. We expected that our father will get well soon and soon be discharged from the hospital, but all our expectations went into vain.

From 3rd November 2024 onwards, the Apollo Hospital and the doctors conducted all the tests viz. Chikungunya, Dengue, Typhoid, Malaria, Scrub Typhus, Ferritin, CT scan, ECG, EEG, Echo, Lumber Puncture and other such tests which we general people do not have much idea. My father was running a high temperature ranging from 101.2 – 103 which continued and the doctors were not able to diagnose the condition. Every day the doctors used to prescribe different type of tests but none of the tests could diagnose the cause of the fever. Suddenly on 7th November 2024 he was transferred to HDU as he started to have convulsion. On 8th November 2024 he was transferred to ICU in the morning and at the night we received a call from the ICU that my father requires ventilation support or else he might have a cardiac arrest. We gave permission over the phone for the ventilation support. At night near about 2:40 AM we received a call from the hospital stating that he had a cardiac arrest so external TPI has been given. The next day when we visited the hospital, they said that the creatinine has increased to 3.7 and he requires dialysis, whereas when he was admitted his creatinine was normal even when the hospital tested in the initial days it was normal. From 3rd November 2024 to 6th November 2024 his WBC count was increasing to alarming levels but still the doctors and the health care facilities didn’t take much care as I feel now.

My father had walked into the emergency ward when he was admitted but during the time of discharge he has died. From 2nd November 2024 to 6th November 2024, he was in his senses and he could speak and recognise us. Thereafter, his condition went down drastically every day till his demise. On 4th Nov a CT scan was done and yet the final diagnosis of Meningo Encephalitis could not be detected. Till the time of his death, we were in the dark about the exact ailment for which he was being treated.

I consider that the hospital’s ignorance and doctors’ negligence was a significant factor in my father’s death, and we are deeply grieved and disturbed by the admission. Our family has suffered an irreplaceable loss, and the truth that such an outcome could have been prevented adds to our grief and frustration.

We understand that the hospital and the doctors should admit to their failure to provide competent health care. This raises serious questions about how such ignorance could occur within a professional medical environment. We are left wondering how the hospital’s processes, systems, and staff failed to identify the risks and take appropriate action before it was too late. It is clear to us that a deep and systemic failure occurred, and the harm caused to our family is immeasurable.

Do you think that the Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, and Dr. Syamasis Bandyopadhyay his team be considered as competent Health Care providers after such a debacle?

We are absolute devasted and have lost complete faith and trust in Apollo Gleneagles Hospital, and Dr. Syamasis Bandyopadhyay and his team.
