Demise of Appu Ghar

The only thing constant in universe is change. Old has to make way for the new. The first amusement park of India, Appu Ghar is located in Pragati Maidan. This was inaugurated on 19-11-84 by Late Shri. Rajiv Gandhi on the occasion of the birth anniversary of his mother Indira Gandhi. Appu Ghar was named after the 1982 Asian games Mascot.

Set up almost on the lines of Disney Land, ’Appu Ghar’ is being closed down in compliance with the orders of the Supreme Court after more than 23 year of existence. The 10+ acres of land will partly be utilized for a new section of the Apex Court for the construction of its administrative block.

Thousands thronged the popular rides at Appu Ghar Sunday for one last memorable visit as the curtains came down on India’s first amusement park that has entertained children and adults alike for over two decades.

The authorities at the amusement park are trying to get an alternative location to house the Appu Ghar.Appu Ghar being shut down is a sad event but I am all for it and hope more places like that would be developed in the every city.

More and more kids are now opting for indoor games, internet and other virtual entertainment avenues. They are loosing out on the experience of being with a real community, meeting people face to face and aren’t getting enough exposure to be street smart.

Why can’t the Apex Court be moved to some other location & preserve this landmark..
