This is what you can call a masterpiece !!

Since I am a literature student, this was something I found very interesting in my syllabus. The title of the play has been taken from the opening lines of Dryden’s translation of Virgil’s Aeneid. The aim of Shaw in writing this play is just the reverse of that of Virgil in writing his epic Aeneid. The play belongs to the genre of pleasant plays. The major themes are war and love.Shaw criticizes both the romantic notions about love and war.It is based on historical battle of Slivnitza, a fourteen days war between Bulgaria and Serbia. The story deals with an actual country and with a historical episode.Shaw has mocked on hero worshiping and sees nothing platonic in love also as he finds no glory in the war too.He has tried to present the contrast between the romantic and real by depicting a story full of artificiality and pomp characters mostly busy living in their own spheres of imagination.Shaw’s writing style plot, characterization everything is just perfect.
