After Mujhe kuch kehna hai, Yaadein, Aks and Ajnabee Anu Malik comes with yet another album ASOKA.Tha lyrics are by Gulzar.Anu Malik seems to be too excited for the music of Asoka and it seems he has been praised for his work in Asoka too but I don’t think the music is as good as it is being made out to be.It is surely good but nothing spectacular and i’ld say that the biggest flaw of the music of ASOKA is that considering that it is a period film it doesn’t suit the bygone era.Lagaan was also a period film but Rehman came up with an exceptional score suiting the period of time the film was set in.But then there lies the differance between REHMAN and MALIK.Isn’t it?

There are seven tracks in the album including a theme music.

San sanana san is the first song in the album and it has been sung by ALKA YAGNIK and HEMA SARDESAI and ANAND BAKSHI is the guest writer for this song. The song has a nice feel to it and is catchy and quite hummable.Alka yagnik has sung it well to.But must say that Anu malik is too inspired by Rehman coz it sounds exactly like a Rehman song.

RAAT KA NASHA is in two versions, one is a solo sung by CHITRA and the other is a duet sung by CHITRA and ABHIJEET.Both the versions are good and exceptionally well sung by the singers particularly Chitra has sung it beautifully. Why don’t they use her voice more often?

ROSHNI SE i’ld say is the best song in the album and the way it has been sung by ABHIJEET and ALKA YAGNIK makes it even more beautiful. It is a slow romantic song but it doesn’t bore you.Gulzar’s lyrics are great too.Actually after hearing this song I could’t believe Anu malik has given the music for it coz it is quite unlike of his music. It is one of the best song of the year considering that it is a Anu malik song.

O RE KANCHI is sung by SHAAN and ALKA YAGNIK and seems like it is some tribal song. The song is quite catchy and upbeat and slowly grows on you.But doesn’t it sound out of place for a film like ASOKA.I just saw the song yesterday on some T.V channel and I was surprised to see Sharukh dancing to it coz he is playing ASOKA and u certainly do not expect King Asoka to dance.Do you?But guess everything is possible in bollywood.

ASOKA THEME MUSIC is really good and touching.Sandeep Choutha is the guest composer here and does some good work here but again the music reminds you a lot of BOMBAY THEME MUSIC.

AA TAYAR HOJA, well I don’t know what it means and maybe GULZAR can explain it better. The song is also pretty ordinary but SUNIDHI CHAUHAN’s vocals make it worth a hear.

So I ’ld say that when you hear ASOKA as just a music album you will like it and it is good too but when you realise that ASOKA is a period film set in 300 B.C it sounds disappointing. But still a good buy.
